In response to "promises are whispered in the age of darkness" - aludes to the idea that when you are young and make promises to your significant other - that your really too young and immature to understand what your promising - "want to be enlightened like I want to be told the end" - he is basically wants to know what his future will be like, can he ever have it back, now that he made the mistake that has tainted his pure promise to love her faithfully. Overall, the song is about a man cheating on his fiance, and wondering if he can still go through with marriage. Now having destroyed the sanctitiy of marriage by cheating, he questions what he should do. The "sin" is cheating, "but to have an empty court" I see as an empty chapel - cancelling the wedding. "We'll be in my honor, make it pain - painfully (i think this should be "quick")" If he decides to go through with the wedding, holding in this secret, he is picturing everyone seeing him as pure and faithful, but realizing their view of him is not the true him- one who has no pride, is pain that is almost unbearable - The "smell that's on my hands" is the taint of his idea of impurity that he now sees in himself. He now is looking for some way out, some way to make amends, but realizes that there is no way to put things back to the way they were. He comes up with a solution - suicide. He doesn't actually go through with it though, because "something" makes him want to "back, back it away" - it being the barrel of the gun. Did he find a light out of the darkness or someone to help him, the song doesn't reveal...

My wife and I thought this was about child abuse by Catholic priests. That person then goes on to abuse others. The incredible guilt he feels then makes him contemplate suicide. (I always thought it was "to heaven and to court", ie the legal court.)

I think this song is about some one in ur life dying and being in a completely hysterical state and looking for answers in ur mind or in church or wherever and ur concience has gone completely numb so u turn to urself and end up commiting suicide in the end because of not being able to handle the loss of this person any more.. or it could be that he killed some one he loved and couldn't handle the guilt and ends up killing himself...

i think this is posible one of the most powerfull pearljam songs ever written to me this song is about someone who has cheated on their lover and doesnt know what to do about it so they listen to their concience but it doesnt tell him anything so he trys to kill himself or is attempting suicide as a way out of his long term and short term conciquences of his actions.

jaco, Well as ginnye stated before, this song DOES sort of have religious hypocrasy in it. Considering that, it may be about the dark ages, (ie, medieval times) and how the Catholic Church was like a totalitarian government, not letting anyone think for themselves and all. The "Promises" could be one of heaven, and an afterlife maybe. I think "the age of darkness" basically refers to the "dark ages". This song isn't about religion, though IMO. My two cents....

"Want to be enlightened like I want to be told the end end yeah And the barrel shakes aimed a-directly at my head Oh help me help me from myself yeah And I listen yeah from both sides of the bed" it's not 'for the voice inside my head' on that one. thought i'd point it out. ciao

To me this song has religious hypocrisy all over it. Definitely one of the most powerful PJ songs ever.

This song is one of their best and not even on any of the albums! Ahh well... I think it fits in with Once/Alive/Footsteps and the whole abused by parents thing that they're all on about. I think the priest line is on about laying the woman down to "sleep", i.e. to her grave. Still, as stated - this song just makes you want to jump around!
