I don't believe in God and I whole-heartedly disagree with religion (two VERY seperate reasons behind that), but I do know David Bazan is an amazing songwriter. The people here who are offended by this song need to open their minds up and see this song, and this album for that matter, as one deep, disturbing, utterly beautiful piece of work.

it is important to keep in mind, as "designed" mentioned, that bazan is telling a story. i think any of us christians would agree that sex is a wonderful thing, with the right person. that is why the song is so amazing and tragic - the character uses beautiful language to describe an intimate moment, but it is unfortunately not with his wife. bazan strikes again - "winners" and "control" give me goosebumps every time.

Ok... Lots of talk on this song... I just wanted to say that I am a Christian and that personally I am very proud of David for stepping out with this song. I agree that by most of his music you can see that he has had a lot of things happen to him in life. I see it as... If you have done the bad, then why can't you repent of it? Why can't you shed light onto darkness? Personally, I see him shedding a lot of light to different situations. He tells stories in most of his songs whether they be in his own shoes or in the shoes of others. I am proud of him for stepping out with this songs and many others. GO DAVID!!

Oh and as far as drum tabs, you should really try to figure out drum parts on your own...it will make you a better player in the end. It's not that hard, trust me. That boomy sound...that's the bass drum. That "whack" is the snare. You can probably figure out the rest.

This song is obviously about a cheating husband. “Pity that its not my wife”. How sad is that line? Bazan’s use of tounge-and-cheek language is great. This song seems to parallel the passion of sex with that of the rapture. The use of Biblical imagery is only rivaled by the depiction of sex. The passion that is in the sexual episode is only hightened by the music. “The tension building… our bodies working… to reach their goal…” From the “fallen sheets” to the “sweat” to the “seed and the spill” the imagery is so intense. I am sure there are plenty of Christians out there that would crap in their pants at this imagery, especially with the comparison to the rapture. The climax of sex and the rapture seem like such a fitting comparison for the husband who is cheating on his wife with Gideon’s Bible in the draw next to the bed. Bazan is obviously saying that there is something wrong with this picture. But this is the society we live in. People look forward to spilling their seed and “one more kiss” than they do to the rapture. Bazan is not implying that anything is wrong with sex, but “pity that it is not my wife”.

"Gideon is in the drawer" refers to the Bible placed in the night stand drawer of most hotel rooms by the Gideons.
