on the movie it showed the army camp pinks dad died with while dave was singin then when roger started you saw the hotel room then pink layin there in the pool i think the thin ice is your mental self ready to crack at any moment what i think a million tear-stained eyes means is all of your bad memories that you have gotten and brought tears to your eyes and when your ices finally cracks all you have is a world of bad memories and get nothin but new bad memories while your clawin the thin ice tring to set everthing back to normal

The whole "momma loves her baby" nonsense foreshadows the overprotectiveness of Pink's mother. The part sung by Roger Waters is about the uncertainty of life, and how life often throws us a curve, which leads to going "out of your mind." This might be the advice of Pink's mother to him, saying to be careful, and that maybe with her guidance, he won't fall through "the ice."

Great song, no doubt. But I'm having some trouble understand Roger's piece of the song. I agree with the generalized view of innocence/protectiveness vs. experience, but what about the actual words? "If you should go skating On the thin ice of modern life Dragging behind you the silent reproach Of a million tear stained eyes" Who are the million tear-stained eyes? Is it a premonition of what Pink will become, or something more universal?

I love Pink Floyd very much, but don't you think the metaphor of life as thin ice is rather generic?

yeah, but it's less of a story and more of a general warning to everyone with an awesome metaphor.

It's always neat when Roger and Dave sing on the same song. They did it to perfection on the wall album, and this one in particular. With Dave supplying the soft beginning part and Roger coming in with his voice soudns like knives on the more bitter part.

I think at the beg. "he" is telling "her," that things may be going great (the sky may look blue, etc.) but soon their will be problems, thus the thin ice. And how long can she skate on thin ice before it cracks? The narrator also puts a piece of himself into the song... "And the sea may look warm to you Babe," saying that he has experienced the coldness of the world and what is underneath when she is inexperienced and sees her enviornment as comforting and beautiful. It is a warning, he is telling her things will not always stay the way you want them.

The beginning makes me think of a mother or father or any other older relative who tries to convince the gullible child that everything is always going to be just allright. Mommy loves you, daddy loves you, everybody loves you and nothing can go wrong. Then the child grows up a man (or a woman, however) just to realise that all he's been believing in has been so absurd. He wants to do something to feel alive, he takes a risk although he knows it's just impossible - for anyone (referring to "the thin ice"). The people watch him wondering to the dead end, some silently reproaching, some tears in their eyes. But does anyone really DO anything about it? Well, no. They see him struggling for his life, they might even get touched by his torture but still they look on, they watch his life like a bloody movie. And in the end there's always some afterwise one who can say: "Well, didn't I say so?"
