| gold is lead probably means nothing more than the singer does not appreciate or find value in things that normally are worth something to people. as in he is not feeling well or finding worth in life at the moment, i doubt it has anything to do with bullets. i think this is one of roger waters best songs along with 'if'. | |

| BleedingHeartArtist if you think this song sucks you must not undertstand the fact that roger was probably on acid at the time he wrote it and even though the lyrics are vague and unconventional you still should appreciate the genius of Waters and not just simply say that this song sucks because if it weren't for this song they might of never made comfortably numb because according to wiki they used the same clinical motifs that they used in this song for that song. so shut ur trap and if I catch you again degrading the floyd on this site im going to track you down and personally kick your ass because this band is the ultimate rock band right below the stones, beatles, and paul butterfield blues band(in my opinion) | |

| BleedingHeartArtist strikes me as the kind of Floyd fan who thinks The Final Cut was Waters' greatest of achievements, meaning we can safely disregard everything he says as being wrong. TUTSaW is a FANTASTIC song, and so is Pow R. Toc H. Anyone who says differently clearly does not understand British psychedelia. Probably the same people who inexplicably can't understand the humo(u)r of Monty Python. | |

| To clarify, the words are awful, the way they are sung is awful, but the closing music is excellent. I just never got there because the beginning was so bad. | |

| steve you're right, lead is valuable from a soldier's POV -- lead is a synechdoche technique, representing bullets, which are extremely valuable in a war zone; i think there are two ways to interpert why they're valuable: (a). if your side has more "lead" than the enemy, you'll kill 'em faster and go home, and (b). if you get hit with "lead" you'll either be put in the infirmary and hopefully soon go home (or at least get a break from the warfare) or you'll be dead and never have to fight the war anymore. just my $.02 | |

| not to be an ass here, but can we get the lyrics any more wrong? lol This is straight outta the book that comes with the CD, so they are the right lyrics: I'm in bed, aching head gold is lead choke on bread underfed gold is lead jesus bled pain is red dark doom gruel ghouls, greasy spoons used spoons, June Bloom music seems to help the pain seems to contemplate the brain Doctor kindly tell your wife that I'm alive flowers thrive realise realise realise! Sounds to me like this guy is a soldier who has been hurt in battle. Gold is lead is a tricky line. I'm guessing what matters most is the lead that's in his body, so gold meaning the most valuable thing. underfed, choke on bread (there's not enough water either lol) Jesus bled, pain is red... dark doom... simple enough gruel is nasty ass food that army people eat. gruel ghouls are maybe the people who eat up all the gruel lol. the spoons are dirty My favorite part of the song is "June Bloom" I think he has the flowers represent being alive.... that's why later he says so strongly that flowers thrive. The one line I don't get is "doctor kindly tell your wife" Did the doctor steal his wife from him? Is the doctor's wife a nurse? Who the hell knows lol. This song is amazing.... people need to stop dissin on songs they don't understand because not being accessible is almost synonymous with artistic. Thanks for reading through all this. Send me an IM people. I love talking Floyd! Syd Barrett may be the greatest poetic mind in history. | |

| The worst song Waters ever wrote. Then again, it's better than Pow R. Toc H. Roger Waters would be much better on Saucerful, especially with set the controls. | |

| I have to agree with TeN & PAWA. This song kicks ass and I think it's trippy too. My first (and until recently only) experience with Floyd was the Dark Side of the Moon album about 7 years ago. About a month ago, I saw "The Departed" and heard Comforatbly Numb .... googled that song and found out it was Floyd. Just purchased: Animals, The Piper, The Wall (DVD & Sound Track), and am looking for like two others that escape me right now. As far as artistic ability goes, these guys had, such a diverse range (drug induced or not) of music and talent that you just HAVE TO appreciate it! Look at how The Dark Side has sold an excess of 15 MILLION in the US alone! 15 Million folks can't ALL be so high that they can't tell quality from garbage. | |
