Jeff, i'm not gonna be an ass. Syd was the first guitarist/vocalist of the band, before David Gilmour came in. That was when the band was more pop-oriented psychedelic rock, goofy British stuff. After taking faarrrrrrrrr too many acid trips, Syd went 'insane.' He spaced out during concerts, and that's when they got Dave to come in to cover for Syd during concerts, but eventually they just fired Barrett and he drifted off into his own reclusive world, to surface sometimes with a solo album produced by Roger or Dave. That line "when the band you're playing in starts playing different tunes" refers to those crazy concerts with Syd playing an entirly different song.
