on a cruise and watching the waves at nighttime. You haven't lived life until
you've done this ;-)

Does anyone know what the first guy at the very beginning of the song says? The first thing he says is "I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years" I can't make out the rest.

to me it means even though your work is never done until you are with life its so hard to just keep breathing but at the same time impossible to just stop breathing. but then its so relaxing and flowy and u can listen to it while u r doing anything... so its kindof like the flow of life and how its just the way things go. people die while u r alive and its a flow, but a change in flow, and things happen as another change in flow... and moves on till it all comes crashing down in your last few breaths while it isn't flowy anymore.

dom_stapleton is correct, however, so is pinkubus_floyd, who submitted these lyrics. On the original album, the first song is as dom_s says; Speak To Me and Breathe as one track. On some later releases, for example the 30th anniversary realease (my edition of DSotM), this track has been split into two parts, giving a track list of 10 songs.

I noticed the same thing crazypinkdiamond did. In this song, one can hear the machine guns of On the Run, the ticking of clocks in Time, the wailing in Great Gig in the Sky, the cash registers in Money, and the laughing in Brain Damage. However, no matter how much I listen to it, I can't seem to hear anything from Us and Them, Any Colour You Like, or Eclipse. Help, no?

Fucked those two post's up Royaly. anyway. yeah, some of you are just plain stupid. "Breathe" is the 2nd track on the album. "breathe, breathe in the air" etc. "Speak to me" is the first track. which leads into "Breathe".. and some of you lot call yourselves Pink Floyd fans. Oh yeah, can someone remind me which one's Pink?

To Inca and Cheshire Smile: Normally I would avoid being a dick, but this is a matter of objectivity, you are wrong. If you had read further down on the chain of comments you would know why. The first song is "Speak To Me", thats "1.a", "Breathe" is the second song, noted as "1.b". Two songs make up the first track. Concept albums are odd like that sometimes.

Has anyone else that listened to this song noticed that this song contains themes form most of the songs in the album? Like the wailing from The Great Gig in the Sky, the cash register from Money, the laughing from Brain Damage, the ticking of clocks from Time, and the machine guns or helicopters from Us and Them. Turn the volume up...

When i tripped out , i thought he was kind of speaking to me. Breathe, relax, don't be scared and enjoy well you can. But it defenetlyy makes sence that this album is about life and the things in life thhat drive you to insanity. Key evedence to this suggestion is the the song Money

.....are these the right lyrics? Speak to Me? The first track on the Dark Side album? Dark Side starts out with the lyric "Breathe, breathe in the air". There is nothing on that track about madness (well, the word madness)

Am I the only one who thinks that the whole cd is an interpretive version of a conversation with a psychiatrist? i mean seriously, these are the things that worry people the most, you know, time and money and thinking that you're going to snap...

The first song on Dark Side of the Moon is actually split into two different songs: Speak To Me and Breathe. Speak To Me is the part at the beginning when you hear the heart beat and people talking. Breathe is the one with the lyrics and music.

WIZARD OF OZ CONNECTION TO DARK SIDE OF THE MOON IS TRUE!!! ARHHHH! If you play the 2 at the same time.... at the start "balanced on the biggest wave" dorothy is walking along the fence of the pig pen... "you race towards an early grave" She falls in. "home, home again" is when she returns home after running away with the mutt. As the bells and chimes ring in one of the songs..... she first walks out into the colourfulworld of munchkin land!!!! its really really wierd... i found all of the munchkins to be dancing to the wierd beat of money!!! NO WAY! i dont think thats where it came from .. but SHIT! "the lunatic is on the grass" is where scarecrow gets freed from the stake and is lying on the grass. And at the end THIS IS THE REALLY WIERD BIT.... THe famous ending Heartbeat is when Tinman first gets found ... HEARTLESS!! i was stunned i thought pinkfloyd had reasons for everything... THEY STILL ROCK! YEAaAAA!

Agree with Soma, the song ends with a feeling of "whatever you do, you are getting closer to death" Each song of the album tries to analyse and depict different aspects of life.

This is all the sound effects from the album, shared with Breathe, which is the is the actual lyrical verse. It does not have anything from Us and Them and Any Color You Like
