I actually enjoy The Get Up Kids cover, but it can never be compared to the Pixies amazing version. Afterall, aren't originals the best? Methinks so. The Pixies were definitely underrated, and I agree with you wickedsprout, I would also connect them to The Velvet Underground, with both bands going unnoticed, despite the influence they had on popular bands/artists to come. I fell in love with the Pixies around 2 years ago, and it's funny that wickedsprout brought up the "Fight Club" link, 'cause that's how I was introduced to them.

No, hairy is right. It's about Alexander Eiffel, who built the Eiffel tower. And your right that the french didn't like it at the time, they felt it was too modern looking to become a national monument. That's it, it's a pretty straight-forward song.

Yes. He's name was Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. A brief biography of him can be seen at http://www.greatbuildings.com/architects/Gustave_Eiffel.html I've always thought of this song as the story of a new Eiffel ("Little Eiffel"... maybe a descendant of the original architect) who built a space rocket in the form of the Eiffel Tower in order to travel to a new world. I got that idea from the CD cover which features an Eiffel Tower blasting off and the verse that says "Pioneer of aerodynamics".

this song is about the eifle tower and when the say phallic they are saying how the eifle tower represents a phallic symbol (a.k.a. looks like a dick) but the song is most def about the eifle tower and how it was at first rejected and how ppl dont know genious when they see it

ALL PIXIES SONGS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!! No one ever gives props to the ones who influenced Kurt Kobain to write "Smells like teen spirit" and most of his other songs.

i think that the Alexander eiffel idea is right, and just a side note, many people realized the pixies were good after their career was over, because their sound was too modern or far ahead of what the people were used to, kind of like how the people of france didnt like the eiffel tower until awhile after it was built, they felt it was too modern, or too advanced.

hey "...hyena" you hit the nail on the head with your analogy... it drives me nuts when people ask me who my fave band is and I am met with the blank stare until I begrudgingly say "they did that song at the end of Fight Club." On one hand, I love that more people were exposed to their music, but on the other, I hate that they are getting the casual fan (like Beck got with "Loser", Nirvana got with "Teen Spirit", and the Cure got with "Friday I'm in Love") who doesn't look into the back catalogues. Snobbish, yes, but it kills me that this band never got the recognition it deserved for being so unique and groundbreaking. I think the Pixies can be compared to the Velvet Underground, in that they may not be the most popular bands (mainstream music-wise) but they served to influence so many bands after them.

I dont think it means that. I think they are talking about a kid and his penis... because they mention phallic. look that word up. it could be about the eiffle tower though?

When the Eiffel Tower was built it was meant to be a temporary construction, and many people in Paris thought it was ugly. It appeared to be doomed and preparations were underway to tear it down, but was actually saved by the new invention of radio - there was nothing else in Paris high enough to act as a good radio mast location. Interesting that people have been talking about the design being ahead of its time, and it was also saved by something ahead of its time in the form of radio. The song seems to suggest that people are petty and backwards looking, and they try to tear down people who try to achieve something great - like the Pixies, perhaps.
