| OK now it makes sense. Mariana refers to the Mariana Trench near Japan which is one of the deepest parts of the ocean on the planet. I always pictured someone riding a tsunami to Japan but the song ends before it hits the coastline. | |

| i heard them say in an interview that the first verse is about this phenomenon in japan where business men would drive their cars, families in tow, into the ocean. | |

| i read somewhere it was about a town in Asia that was mutilating all their townspeople. i can't remember specifically, but i heard this is what the song is about. either way its a wonderful song that could be taken literally (as in the town goes crazy) or metaphorically (you go crazy, you self destruct, its all good) | |

| This I think is talking about how suicide, and well more specifically death, is a release, and that even though you're dying you're actually freeing yourself. I think thats what this song is trying to say, its not condoning suicide, but its simply just saying about how death is freedom, its a release. | |

| You can take it this way also: From the picture of a crab in the CD sleeve and the reference to crustaceans, it can be about autothomy: a property of lower forms of life which consist in the automatic self-mutilation of a limb as a way to escape from predators, like little lizards do with its tail. Certain crab species can execute autothomy when grabbed by a leg. They detach the taken leg and so they escape from, let's say, a small boy who wanted to play with it. The kid thinks the crab is dead, but it's really diving into the ocean again to be drafted by the El Niño towards Marianas Trench. | |

| You could also take it this way: What if he's singing about some derranged lunatic that thinks he's a fish out of water. Cuz no chicks will give him any :) (Sorry, Im preventing myself from diving deep by making sick jokes)He keeps feeling as if the ocean is "calling" to him. It makes his heartache. (I am so cheezy) So he decides to go back to his home and leave this hellhole they call earth. Let's say an urge to go swimming took over him and he could stand it no longer (crazy bastard) So (finally) he ceased to resist... I wonder who he "gave" his goodbyes to. Oh, that's right. He's a crazy lonely bastard who thinks he's a fish, he has not met the girl who thinks she's a dolphin yet, so...he has no friends! He probably waved (parade wave, of course) goodbye to the air, earth, rocks (crazy bastard) and anyone who would happen to see him going home that day. | |

| The song is about Japanese business men driving themselves and their families into the ocean, but here's a little extra bit about the "cease to exist" line from Frank Black: "Mostly I try to stick with more physical imagery just because it’s more tangible mentally than he or she or it, like ‘Little Red Corvette.” The first line is a joke on The Beach Boys and Charles Manson. They hung out together and all that. And he wrote this song called ‘Cease To Exist.’ And supposedly The Beach Boys used a lot of his lyrics and gave him a sports car or something. And they had this boys loved girl song where they went ‘cease to resist’ and changed his lyrics around. They couldn’t have ‘cease to exist’ because it was all powerful suicide stuff! He’s just some glorified charismatic figure like Hitler. But he does say some interesting things, he’s a result of something but I don’t know what." | |
