I'm sure in the verse when Brian sings while playing the acoustic 
there is no bass but here's a bass line which goes quite well under it

on the last time before the didgeredoo comes in end on the 4th fret on the E string.

This song reminds me of evening bathtubs on a hillside parking lot, and coldsweats running off of all the people who actually want to take baths in them. Very, very dreamy---you just know what it all means.

This song helps em in my current situation. I fell in love with my best friend, and things evolved, we had sex and I expected commitment from it all because I felt we were together but she was so confused on things and said she wasn't ready for a relationship yet we kept having sex and this song just kinda helps me out. I feel he is talking about a person who would do things with him sexually and be close to him but she wouldn't commit, she wouldn't be with him in a relationship, she loved the sin but not the sinner, that's how I feel about this song.

"I know, the past will catch you up as you run faster" I just love that line, and I love the music too, I know what you mean, TimBuck2. I don't really know what this song is about but, being a songwriter myself, I think it is one of those songs only the writer and some of his/her closest friends really understand. That was a pointless comment but never mind

he was deeply in love with someone who just wanted sex, not him. so the person loves things he does, but not him. and.. well, loves the sin they commit together, but doesn't love him at all. but he's REALLY in love with this person, and he allows the person to play with him and do whatever he likes, pretending to himself that the person cares. this day he's just realized what the person had been doing to him, and this knowledge is killing him. but he thinks there will be a comeback, because the past will catch up with the person as much as he/she tries to deny it/him. and well, because he IS brian, after all :) the person's broken up with him, and let him loose in a world of contradiction, in which this person was involved too.

its like a self- hate song, but also blaming over people around you, blaiming them for why u feel so down. know, the past will catch you up as you run faster I know, the last in line is always called a bastard You cant get away from what youve done, and others wont let u foeget it.

"you love the song but not the singer" --- a few months ago one of my best friends used this line to show me how i truly felt about my (now EX) boyfriend. i loved the song but not the singer, as in i didnt love *him* i just loved *love* and thats sort of what the whole song means to me...

To 'want the sin without the sinner' is used in many variations regarding homosexuality. Homophobes try rationalizing their beliefs on homosexuality with those in their families by syaing they hate the sin, but not the sinner (ie. they believe homosexuality is a sin and are against it, but still love their family member/friend/whomever) in an attempt to reason their view. Anyhoo, I think Brian saying 'want the sin without the sinner' is saying that he (or whomever the line is about) wants to be able to sin (practice homosexuality..."sin" is sarcastic; Brian doesn't believe it is a sin) without being labelled a sinner (being outcasted). I don't have many thoughts about the other lines, but that one in particular really struck a chord with me.

for me it was always obvious that the song is about lust. "you love the song, but not the singer" means that you only desire the person, but without any further commitment. and "the past will catch you up as you run faster" means that you can't do things without thinking, because they can have fatal influence on your further life (for example you already have a boyfriend who you love and who would brake up with you if you cheated on him). so, there are two people who want to have sex and the desire is enormous, but they shouldn't do it. i always thought so...

I love this song... the lyrics are so so, but the muzic, it's just kinda... wows you away. creeps up on you... hard to explain.
