The album is based on a ghost story. As far as I know, a ghost is only supposed to appear when the person dies a violent, unnatural death. I believe the song is the ghost recollecting the circumstances of his death. The third verse may mean that the person who dies did not expect his death nor that he would become a ghost. Also, it may be that during, or upon, his death, a treachery is revealed to him. Maybe he is betrayed by his own mother ("never look for the truth in your mother's eyes", then "all you knew was wrong"). I think the last verse almost certainly refers to a (failed) resuscitation attempt. "Sons of mothers tearing you apart" are a team of ER surgeons, and "cutting a way to your heart" is done to perform direct heart massage. Like blacksheep55, I initially I thought the song was about unnatural causes of death, which leads to the person becoming a ghost. I still think it's possible that this is interspersed with the story of the ghost's own death.

I think this song is about a car crash, i don't know if envolves a drunk man or not, but for the lines about "did you imagine" ... The broken windshield, the sound as a gun could be the impact of your head onto this ... the song could means the radio stills playing ... When you die all your plans changes, there is no return. When you are dying, I think you start to remember all you love, and all you dream (this includes the person you love) The "Deja vü" sentence could means that strange trip to the afterlife, the tunnel with the bright light at the end ... it's a new beginning, "Every thought from here on in your life begins" ... "all you knew was wrong" ... The last part I think is about a person who are in an emergency room (the scissors cut the clothes to the heart, and the blood borrows the persons sight ... or stills in the windshield). The envy thing could represents the happiness of your rivals (in terms of love of course) . So, once you die, you arrive to somewhere, but definitively to not here.

It seems like this song is talking about a drunk driving accident late at night, and the effects it had on those involved. "Never stop the car on a drive in the dark" could mean that maybe in the story, someone had pulled over for some reason and was then hit by a drunk driver. The "mother's eyes" quote could mean that maybe a sibling of the person killed was asking their mother what happened, but they didn't really want to find out. "Final sound as a gun" could mean that it happened so fast it sounded like a gun going off, which is backed up the "smashing windscreen" line. The "did you ever imagine" line could mean that the person in the car wasn't killed instantly, and layed there fading out while their radio continued to play. The chorus could stand for a friend or family member, possibly lover, who's entire life revolved around this one person, and all of the sudden, they were gone. All of their plans for life were shattered and all of their dreams extinguished. I'd go into more detail, but I think you get the picture.

I think this song is about unexpected death in the general sense - no one expects to die through a smashing windscreen, or by being shot, or poisoned. "Don't look for the truth in your mother's eyes" - could this be about a parent saying what needs to be said to protect their child, even to the point of lying to them?

I never thought about the drunk driving accident. I got the impression that the person in the song pulled over one night, possibly to help someone, and was shot and left to die in their car. The lines "Could you imagine the final sound as a gun Or the smashing windscreen of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out Was a song?" went with that thought, and the rest of it sounds like the thoughts he is having, he can't believe its over with.

god, this song is absolute gold. my favorite PT song to date... Akerfeldts guitar part is such a perfect cameo for this song. i dont know if this is about a drunk driving accident, there are a few things pointing toward this, but i have a feeling its about something else. if it helps, i know the lyrics for the deadwing album were based on an unproduced script that steve wilson and his filmmaker friend wrote. but i dunno. its a good guess, none-the-less.

Ive always thought of this song being based around James O Barr's graphic novel 'The Crow' or following a similar premise. In the book a man (Eric) and his newly proposed-to fiancée (Shelley) are driving back from a romantic day at the beach when their car breaks down and they are met by some drug fuelled men who shoot Eric in the head and then gang rape and kill shelley while eric helplessly watches. After trying to save Eric's life in the hospital the doctors proclaim him dead and a year later eric returns from the grave to exact revenge. I think this ties up in a few places reasonably well even if it isn't the actual meaning - but it does go with what Steven said about this being an 'Intelligent love song' Key Lines: 'Never stop the car on a drive in the dark' - eric and shelley were killed when their car broke down one night 'Could you imagine the final sound as a gun' - they were both shot 'Ever had the feeling you've been here before?' - As he comes back to life 'Ever thought from here on in your life begins And all you knew was wrong?' - Starting a new 'life' dominated by revenge and sorrow 'Did the scissors cut a way to your heart? Did you feel the end before the suns of mothers Tearing you apart?' - Eric witnesses everything in the hosital as the surgeons try to save him
