in the intro you just let high G ring... if you dont know what G
is it's
G----
D-5--
A----
E----
then it goes into some riff like
G-------------
D-3-5-5-3-5-5
A-------------
E-------------
do that a few times then pause for a bit, then go back to it
increadibly easy song
thanks for learning

| I've been puzzled by this song since the day I heard it (it is an AMAZING tune btw, listen to Zane Lowe version if you can), you can see my April 5th try here http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:idPhS_8eh0IJ:dhost.info/andeh88/phpBB2/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D391%26start%3D0%26postdays%3D0%26postorder%3Dasc%26highlight%3D%26sid%3D70b2de804d2df0be3195a7fec387e4ef+secretary+raconteurs+alexis&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3 I'm convinced it has a deeper meaning, I'm simply unable to hear all the words :) I've been amused by all the comments in all the reviews about the supposed "playfulness" and "goofiness" of these lyrics, is anyone aware of any comment by the band on this topic? | |

| ome people on other forums, have worked out the freemason's reference, but a lot of people are still guessing at these lines so here's what I think they are with references: Venerable obscurist malarkey a doulocracy ecclesiarchy The exarchy's inspector inquisitor I dare mock an illustrious master Venerable http://www.freesearch.co.uk/dictionary/venerable Obscurist http://membres.lycos.fr/coupland/coupgx.html though possibly independently derived from obscure, using artistic license, with reference to the esoteric nature of the Freemasons and for self-reference to the song itself. Doulocracy http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Doulocracy Ecclesiarchy http://www.tiscali.co.uk/reference/dictionaries/difficultwords/data/d0004916.html Exarchy http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/exarchy Inspector Inquisitor http://www.sacred-texts.com/mas/md/md32.htm Illustrious Master http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22illustrious+master%22+freemason&btnG=Search&meta= Freemasons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemasons Fellow Craft http://www.sacred-texts.com/mas/md/md03.htm Intimate Secretary http://www.sacred-texts.com/mas/md/md07.htm Kakistocracy http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/kakistocracy "I had an uncle but he got shot" and "This ringing in my ears won't stop" http://www.rickross.com/reference/freemen/freemen8.html http://www.libertytothecaptives.net/masonic_initiation.html "The other foot looks like it won't drop" and "is this greeting the type that's meant for me" are secret handshake references. I think that Benson plays the role of a freemason sponsoring White in this song. The seemingly inane things that he's "got" surely has relevance too, but I'm not sure what that is. Perhaps it's a device used such that, the initial impression that this song gives is designed to portray the superficial daftness of the Freemasons whereas closer inspection reveals it's esoteric, "obscurist" nature, or perhaps this is just an elegant coincidence. Sorry for the many edits, I think I'm finished now. I hope this enriches someone's enjoyment of the song. Whatever the full meaning, it is in my humble opinion, a masterpiece, that we're not really expected to understand, very reminiscent of the way Cobain used to write. "He's the one, who likes all the pretty songs, and he likes to sing along, and he likes to shoot his gun, but he knows not what it mean" | |

| oohh I LOVE these guys, and this song! but i think it's malarkey, not malarchy..? cause I looked it up, and to my surprise, malarchy isn't a word (I thought it was..?) and yeah that last verse is pretty hard to understand haha "i've got so many things you haven't got" I like taht | |

| well. the bit there should be: "Is this greeting the type that's meant for me? Are you part of this kakistocracy?" this doesn't sound right: "Then on rubble of malarchy Down with luck we'll see Ecclesiarchy" There was a St. Malachy. But as far as I know malarchy isn't an actual word. I tried it on urban dictionary and it defines it as "Something that generates a lot of work or fuss." Soo...I dunno. Maybe Jack White reads UD. xD BUT. I don't hear anything like 'malarchy' anyways. I heard 'obscurest (somethingsomething)'. And as for the last verse. I've got nothing. Can't figure it out at alllll. | |

| As kakistocracy is a system of governing where the least able have power as opposed to - and for example - a democracy where those who have been selected by the people have power. | |
