Well, this song sounds like synthesizers, but John Greenwood has said in interviews
that it was made by guitars. However, my speakers rattled when I turned up the bass, and
there is that ominous line, so I inferred that there must be bass on this song. Also, about
the holding notes (~), these are long holds, not long in the traditional sense, but ranging
around 15-30 seconds, which is harder than it looks.

Its such an amazing song, and just Ed O'Brien alone with his guitar, amp and some pedals. I don't think anything from Kid A should be listened to away from the rest of the album - it works in that specific order, and should be heard as Thom et al. intended it to be.

Sounds like they got too lazy to write a real song, so they said "hey lets make random guitar noises and call it abstract" don't get me wrong though, radiohead's awesome.

I read somewhere that this might be related to/inspired by a Ray Bradbury story. I forgot what the title was, but basically the story goes like this: A spaceship crash lands on a planet covered by dense grey clouds. Under the clouds, it endlessly rains on the surface of the planet. Due to this, viney plants grow very quickly. The plants grow so quick that if a person stays in one place too long, the plants will eventually cover them in a couple of minutes. Supposedly, before Kid A came out, what appeared to be a short synopsis of the story apeared on the Radiohead website. This was explained better on the website "Radiohead Unpackt", but the site appears to be down at the moment...

not disagreeing, but just wondering: Piemerica, how did you come to the conclusion that the song is about that? I mean, there are no lyrics, its just ambient guitar noise.

ILOVELIFE, it does have a meaning, but it's only possible to get it in context with the rest of the album. Of course, the whole point of Radiohead is there's no exact meaning and it's open to interpretation, but to me it's just a quasi-hallucinogenic journey into the mind, being carried by your imagination. I get this impression partly because of the dream-like, ambient sound, like fabricated landscapes in the mind, and also because of the oblivion-seeking introspection of the previous song, How To Disappear Completely.

it cirtainly deserves recognition, it is noise, soothing ambient noise. the calming soothing effect many of you talk about is otherwise known as "meditation"

This is a really cool song because it brings a strong sense of release in your mind, and you slowly relax.

no, a devotional exercise of or leading to contemplation is otherwise known as "meditation". the calming soothing effect isn't meditation in itself, it might lead to or aide in meditation, but it isn't the act of meditation.
