Bullet In the Head by RATM

Tabbed by Paul Fivey p.fivey@dundee.ac.uk

This is a correction of a pretty good tab by R.Allen Canterbury
which only had a couple of little niggles.

Firstly, no pick!
Tim Commerford has never used a pick on a RATM record that I know
of (although I may be wrong) and certainly never uses one live
no matter what certain transcriptions, especially Guitar World's
"Ghost of Tom Joad (live)," may say. If you're gonna make muted noises
you need to make them with your fingers, not a pick.

This riff is based around what Tom Morello refers to as a Hendrix chord:

This is EADGBE: 076780 on a six string guitar or 0767 on bass.

Its the chord that Purple Haze is based around and it crops up
in RATM songs like Vietnow and Testify.

Verse riff:

G-----------------7--
D-----------------6--
A--7-7--7-7-7--------
E--------------0-----

Occasionally, it varies as:

G------------------6/7--
D------------------5/6--
A--7-7---7-7-7----------
E---------------0-------

or

G----------------------7~9---
D------------------7~9-------
A--7-7---7-7-7---------------
E---------------0------------

And in the live long form video he varies it at one point as:

G-------------------7--
D-------------------6--
A--7-7-----------------
E----------------0-----

Chorus:

G-----------------------------------
D-----------------------------------
A----------0--------2-------0-------
E--0---3----------------3-------0---

Outro:

G-----------------------------------
D-----------------------------------
A--7-7-7-7-7-5----------------------
E--------------5-6-5-0-3-5-3-0-0-0--
Play this many.many times

then:

G------------------
D------------------
A--7-7-------------
E------0-0-0-0-----
a few times and end with multiple E notes at the 7th fret on the 3rd string.

Both of you are saying basically the same thing. The 'in house drive-by' is talking about how the media delivers the metaphorical 'bullet in the head' via your TV, radio, magazines, etc.

atthedrive-in is annoying. RATM have got a great way of getting their message across to people and they just happen to be making money of it. If you like you can ignore their countless donations to useful charities. Their way of spreading the word sure beats your way of bad mouthing people who are better off than you. What do you listen to? Eminem? Sorry for ignoring your advice renegrenade. He was pissing me off. I thought the stuff on people's cars was something about the jesus fish? Im Australian so I miss out on these little messages Here in Australia we dont all talk likethe crocodile hunter. Fuck I hate that guy.

I can't say I doubt this will do any good but if we really want "AttheDrive-in" to shut the fuck up we have to ignore him. I realize that by stating this I'm recognizing him, but he posts this shit on so many RatM forums and we just need to ignore this attention hound. On the note of the song's meaning I have to agree with most of you guys about how the media and these corporations are making you braindead which can be even more dangerous than "a bullet in your fucking head". Also yellow ribbons is (imho) speaking about the yellow ribbions we in the (supposedly) good 'ol USA use to show support for our troops. If you look how many people have yellow ribbon stickers on their cars for this Iraq war it's disgusting.

This song is about how media and the material products of the new age have great influence on today's society and culture. It is suggested here that through these, a sort-off brainwashing or 'mind rape' occurs; media is thus used as a way to sell propaganda or political messages, and is thus a potent weapon against the people, much like a 'bullet in the head'.

i dont think he knows what a drive-by is. drive by = driving past someone while shooting at them. The premise of this song is that you're being metaphorically shot in the head by TV, the bullets aren't killing you they're just making you brain dead.

The in-house drive by is the commercials, news and assorted crap that is pumped into your house (and thus your head) via your television. We are the "victims" when we feed into believing all the crap that thrown at you. "Believin' all the lies that they're tellin' ya Buyin' all the products that they're sellin' ya"

I know what you mean Aneurysm, it's quite pathetic when people conform to mainstream society, and become victims. That's why I'm in debt to Rage for waking me up, so I could realize what was going on around me. There be no shelter here The Frontline is everywhere RATM Forever
