| I just spent some time going over various translations of the these lyrics into Englis. YUCK! Ok, well German can be tough to translate, but the translations I have found tend way to much towards the literal. This is a common error, especially when translating poetry or lyrics. I have taken some time to do my own translation, using web translators and the Merriam Webster online thesaurus to try to get a better "feel" for the lyrics. I will give the lyrics and then some comments on my choices. THIS IS FOR FUN, enjoy Who knows pain is condemned From the fire that burns in skin I throw a light upon my face A burning cry FIRE FIGHT! BANG BANG Who knows pain is exalted From the fire that burns in lust A spark slams A burning cry! FIRE FIGHT! BANG! BANG! FIRE FIGHT! Who knows pain is perilous From the fire that burns the soul BANG! BANG! Perilous is the child that burns with fire life is burned away A burning cry! BANG! BANG! FIRE FIGHT! Your gladness is not my gladness It is my sadness BANG! BANG! FIRE FIGHT! Lots of fun! OK first things first. I translate "Feuer Fire" as "Fire Fight!" The literal translation would be "Fire Free" Not quite Fire FreeLY that would be "Feuer Freilich", so a literal translation just doesn't work at all. So what's the "feel" of it. "Fire Freely" is the equivalent to the American Militarty term "Weapons Free". This is a command that is issued to the troops to indicate that they are free to engage in a "Fire Fight" with enemy at their discretion. This is a convoluted parth I know, but then there is this. "Fire Fight" sounds more like "Feure Frei" than a literal translation. So it seems to work better for me. So the guy "Shrieks" "Fire Fight!" and shoots... "Bang ... Bang" See where I am going here? Who knows pain is criticized. Thats just WEAK in English. So, I hit the thesaurus and came up with "condemned" a condemnation being a very strong criticism. The rest of the verse is just a MISERY of trying to translate an idea. "From the fire that burned up the skin" ????? WTF does THAT mean? So I went with "From the fire that burns in skin" ie the fire of life. The rest of this verse is a word choice. I might even translate the next lines as "I cast a light Upon my face" And then I go with "Fire Fight" which is what you get into if you go "Weapons Free" and start "firing freely" at an enemy. Bang! Bang! "Whoever knows pain is raised" ??? Gawd that's lame so why not "Who knows pain is exalted" as in "HE who knows pain is ..." "from the fire that burns in desire" Desire??? yuck how weak. But AH HA LUST translates directly! And, somehow I don't think this a song about something as tame as desire. Ein Funkenstoß In ihren Schoß ARG!!!!! This is one of those things that just doesn't translate at ALL unless you know German slang. I don't. I suspect it has something to do with male sexual climax inside of the girl, but I just cant tell for sure. So I went out on a limb and translate the meaning into a veiled refrence to "blood lust" wich is the sexual thrill some people feel when taking the life of another being Hence I get to "A spark slams right in the LAP A Burning Cry! FIRE FIGHT!" The idea being that fire fights are better than sex. Oh "Ein heißer Schrei" literally I think "A Heated Shriek!" But "A Burning Cry" gives a better "feel" and "cry" preserves some of the original rhyme. Gefährlich ist wer Schmerzen kennt Man this was tough. The direct translations violate so many English usages that they are all pretty much unintelligable. So I started really looking at the word Gefarhlich ..."dangerously" So what is dangerous about people who know pain? Hmm. they get used to it? Maybe not afraid of it? uhoh. They are not afraid to face pain/harm/peril and, oddly Perilous does translate direcly to Gefarhlich from the English. So I go to "Who knows pain is perilous" as in " He who knows pain...." And again the idea that life and fire and the soul are all connected "From the fire that burns the soul" Next Gefährlich das gebrannte Kind Oh gawd. literally "Dangerously the child that burned?" arg how to make sense of it. So I went with perilous again, it rhymes. but the word order still fails to make sense so I played with that too and got to "Perilous is the child that burns" I am thinking of kids playin with matches not kids burning. They aren't all that perilous when burning unless they start running around. EW! ugly visual that. Dein Gluck is nicht mein Gluck ist mein Ungluck I went with gladness and sadness because it fits the meter better than hapiness and misery. Also I think Gladness comes to English from Gluck anyway considering the "GL" root of the both words. So there it is. My little translation. I think it flows better and really gives the meaning in English far better than anything else I have seen. I.E. Fire Fights are better than sex and teach you the deeper meanings of damnation and exaltation. Oddly it also seems to contain the sentiment children mixing in fire fights is not a bad thing. I hope you folks have as much fun with this as I did. It's all probably B.S. anyway. But it's a great song and I love it! OLtos | |

| ARG OOPS! Here is acorection to my last paragraph in my previous long winded post. I mean to say that the feeling I get is that this song says, Fire fighs are better than sex. They teach you the deeper meanings of damnation and exaltation. And, oddly, seem to suggest that Children getting into fire fights is a BAD thing. ( I said it backwards in my original post, sorry.) | no offense, but if you have to use webtranslaters to translate something, dont do it, translaters can be astoundingly misleading and its better if you can actually speak the language fluently yourself 'feuer frei' though it does litterally mean 'fire free' it's used just like our phrase 'fire at will' and thus it's normally translated as such getadelt wird wer scherzen kennt accused becomes he who knows pain geadelt ist wer schmerzen kennt loved is he who knows pain, geadelt litterally means 'treated nicely' gefährlich ist wer scherzen kennt dangerous is he who knows pain funkenstoß this one ppl are always asking about bc its a made up word, its commonly translated as 'shower of sparks' as for the song meaning, its obvious that its talking about gunfire and hell, but the song also seems to be about what happens to these ppl, you can see this in my translations of some of the lines, moving from the person being attacked for something that someone else viewed as wrong, and then they are loved and treated nicely bc of what they went through, then they just love their minds bc of their experience and become dangerous, and another line: mit feuer das vom leben trennt with fire that runs from life fire is commonly used to symbolize hatred and anger that is devouring the person, someone who is blinded by rage, this makes me thing that this person is going on a blind rage and bc of the evil acted upon him he himself becomes evil and acts evil upon other people, possibly the ones who made him that way | |
