No, no, no, no, NO! You suicide guys have it wrong. A while ago, he was in a magazine, in a little songwriter section, and talked about this song. I don't remember exactly what he said, but it was something along the lines of this: he was going to a new school, and it was a chance to show a different side of his personality. That's it. Come on. Robert is so frickin cheery. It IS about being yourself, and knowing yourself in the first place. And having the confidence to be yourself in a new place.

by insignificant2all_5 on 02-02-2005 @ 08:31:59 AM The whole suicide thing is so lame. Honestly people, this band is one of the most cheerful retro rock bands around. Before you start to make assumptions, think about your own context. Most of you are angsty teenagers with boring middle class lives (no offense....actually i don't care if i am offensive, it's most likely true) not to mention you all probably want to kill yourselves as well. Rooney are a great band, but if you look at most of their songs, they aren't very heavy in their lyric meanings, the band is a feel good rock outfit and they're just there to have fun. wow. that is offensive. and I really dont think it applies to me. BUT ANYWAYS I DONT think its about suicide. i think its about opening up and being yourself instead of hiding who you really are.

if you only have one reason to love rooney, it should be because the songs kick ass. if you have two reasons for loving rooney, the second should be that the lead singer is the little brother of Jason Schwarzman!!! drummer of Phantom Planet (AMAZING band) and start of such wonderful movies as Rushmore and Slacker

This song deals with becoming who you "are" and not being sure if a greater power. (buy in the sky) Who may be peers or a "higher force" will side or accept the path the person's taking. Overall, its a good song that anyone can relate to.

I just saw them perform last saturday and this was the first song they sang which happens to be one of my favorites but anyway, I agree with the ones who say that he is going to kill himself or atleast thinking about the meaning and value of his life. In the first verse when hes talking about "the colors" (that happen to be red) which represent something internal that he is struggling with that no one else notices or sees ("and nobody knows that they exist") After a while he finally realizes that the only way to end the pain he feels is to end his life, bringing his "blue side"; his peaceful, calm, dead side. Thats what I got out of it And then the second verse I think hes questioning his belief in God and whether he (God) agrees with how he's living and approves of the decisions he's made in his life thus far

insignificant, no offense, but even though there are a lot of whiney middle class people twisting lyrics into their own pathetic meaning, I'm positive this is what the song is about. It's only obvious? Do you honestly think this is a happy song? an upbeat, whatver, I was just jotting down a fun tune for the kids song. WTF, get a fucking brain you idiot:)

thats funny that all of u thought it was about suicide. i had never thought of it like that... never even considered it. i had originally thought the colors (red and blue) had basically just represented different sides of his personality. he had hid his "red side" from someone, and now that they saw it, it was "a sign for the end" of their relationship. i thought the "buyer in the sky" might be the person he was really meant for or something. and the part that says "what i will miss" was again, what he will miss in the relationship. the suicide explanation is much better tho... thats probably right
