This is definately one of Rush's worst songs, bad coroporate radio rock at it's worst... it sounds more like Foreigner or Loverboy than Rush. 70's Rush>all other Rush.

"One likes to believe in the freedom of music, But glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity." This is one of the most true verses. Radio stations are constantly playing games to retain listenership.

Ok, so this song, as said is to underline the growing problem of advetisers wanting to capitalize on ad time. However, I believe this song is much more than that; I think it's an amazing romanticization of something many of us take to be as a secondary medium--the radio. First of all, there's the wonder of its physical possibility--how can music be spread out over dozens of miles invisibly and instantly. That's the first part of the chorus. Then comes the real poetic part--"emotional feedback on a timeless wavelength"--I love the combination of abstract and tangible components here, and it's incredible how well it truly states how one feels when they hear their favorite song on the radio: "It's almost like they knew I wanted to hear this!" and the lost concept of the present one can get while staring out of the window listening to music, the unfolding melody invoking an ever-expanding line of thought. When I first truly listened to the words of this song, it was like a double of the feeling it describes--I felt this feeling as the music discussed this feeling. It's just a universally encompassing song, and I hope everyone can see into that.

To me this is a song about love. A DJ out there behind the sceens of radio and a woman. Her day begins by hearing his friendly voice and him playin' their favorite songs, cause he has the magic to do that. He is a part of her daily routine and he makes her day. The invisable airways is crackled by the life meaning, the power of thier love. She and he are the only ones that know. The echos of salesmen are the echos of her favoirte DJ's voice doing the commericals. That is what I think....

My favorite of all Rush songs. Classic. I saw them perform last week (I recommend everyone who can to do so) and they performed a medley to open the show including Finding my way, Anthem, Bastille Day and then concluded by launching flawlessly into this song. For me this was the high point of the show. But their performance of 2112: Overture and Temple was good too but since they didn't include the rest of the song it was not. But hey Rush rocks anyway.

The first 3 stanzas are kind of just describing the radio and what a good thing it is. The 4th appears to deal with the controversy when the tape recorder was first introduced, people could just record music off the radio, so it's saying it's a question of your honesty. (The same issue that went on with the VCR and now the file-sharing) The rest of the song kind of ties it together with the whole music-for-profit theme that seems to be going on overall. Now to the reason I am really writing this, because, thanks to Philosophic Musings quoting that line I realized it's almost a direct copy of a line from Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence". Rush: "and the words of the *profits* were written on the studio wall... and echoes with the sounds of salesmen." Paul Simon: "and the words of the prophets were written on the subway walls... and echoes with the sounds of silence" Now that I take the time to think about it... The two songs really have a lot in common. The most accepted meaning of Sounds of silence was that people are building to much on pop-culture and not really listening, and if they did they would find that the music has a lack of meaning and is not heartfelt. So by writing this I realized a few things myself, I guess it's true what my professor always tries to tell me. "If you write something down, it causes you to think about it." Once again he's proved right. Sorry for being kinda long-winded there (I say this as I continue to type) But, you know, it kinda happens sometimes. Especially when you don't have something outlined and of course I'm not gonna take the time to outline what was originally a "comment" and turned it into this... Well never mind.

on the other hand, it pretty rabidly demonstrates not just Rush's profound talent in playing (just three men playing this immensely deep sounding music bot in studio AND on stage), showing off their technique with song construction, time signature changes, fusion of different styles (hard rock, prog rock, electronics, ska and caribbean influences) ...sure the lyrics aren't Shakespeare maybe but they get the point across very well and it's a great song to listen to.

The song was inspired by a Toronto radio station, at which time was known as CFNY FM 102.1 "The Spirit Of Radio". Now known as Edge 102
