when i first heard this song i wasn't sure what the meaning was behind it, but the more i thought about it the more i thought it was about anorexia and someone wanting so bad to be like the movie stars and wanting to look like them. one of my friends also told me that he read some interview or something and that was what they said it meant, who knows, i can see it this way and the ways mentioned before make perfect sense as well

one of my favorite std songs. the way chris's lyrics come out makes u feel something...i agree, its basically about a girls negative self image. but like all other std songs, the meaning's a lot deeper.

I think this song is about a girl who wants to have a life that's real. But she's surrounded by all the fake things in life. Cars, Calories, etc. And all this fake-ness is "taking bites out of her insides". It makes her sad that the whole world is obsessed with fake things. Everytime she does something fake, it hurts her inside because she wants to be real but just can't. She becomes a hollow shell, like many people out there.

Ive been studying a lot about Marilyn Monroe and I think the song has certain conatations towards her life, and the whole 'living the American Dream'

In teen people's issue of the 25 hottest under 25 they said this song was about anorexia. It makes sense to with the line "And when August came around, the bathing suits were on the ground replaced by a cotton cloak." when you have anorexia you get increddibly self concious, esspecialy when swimming...

these lyrics aren't very confusing, but they get across one of the best points in this world, that applies to a great number of Americans. Its fucking sad, but there are alot of people that are hollow shells in this world.

This song is not about a "shallow" girl, or anorexia. It is about a girl who is a dreamer, not shallow. She wants a better life. The song keeps saying "take a bites out of her insides" this is not saying making her more shallow or anorexic, it is saying that all these little things take away her dreams, her passion, her "better life." It is just taking her down to become a regular un-happy person. If yo uget right down to it this is a really depressing song.

This song is about anorexia, Chris said so in an interview. its about a girl whose life is messed up, her parents have problems, and she dreams of living the holly wood dream, and so she become sanorexia to fit the model. this is not my opinion, this has been explained officially.

This song is about aneroxia. Its about growing up in the typical Hollywood lifestyle and having to compete w/ beautiful people and starving yourself. It makes me wonder if it is about an actual person.... She squints at her reflection because she cant stand the sight of herself--- she thinks she's so ugly and fat. and the deal about the bathing suits--- she wont wear one bc she doesnt want anyone to notice all the weight she lost. Its a sad sad song--- but i love STD cant wait to see them in the pop-disaster tour!!!

i think that this song is about anorexia and trying to live a life that is the same as others. basically, trying to be popular and fitting in. it really is a great song that fits our society today and is probably one of my fave std songs.

tankgirl- i think the "and when august..." line means she wouldn't wear a bathing suit and a cotton cloak would be regular clothes..maybe baggy because cloaks are generally large...thats always what i've assumed the line meant
