Title: Prayer to God
Album: 1000 Hurts
Artist: Shellac
Tabbed: Dante Dahmer (Neurvall@aol.com)
Bob Weston uses a legendary Shellac amp on this song probably (If you’re
not familiar with the amp I’m talking about, its big, black (Big Black) and
has only one knob, volume). To create the Albini-Weston feel, I play this
song completely on the E. There is one main bass part in the song: the
chorus. If you listen, Weston does a little diddy at about 0:35 that follows
Albini’s guitar but stops at 0:48. It is pointless to tab it out to me, so
I’ll just tab my interpretation of the chorus. Listen for rhythm, and
possible variations that I might have missed, though I don’t think there is,
it just sounds that way with Weston’s settings and Trainer playing, a lot
like on Watch Song.

| This song is amazing. It is also the first Shellac song that I listened to and I immediately had to get everything else they did. I was totally amazed. For those who misunderstood the lyrics, read them again and find the song somewhere and listen to it. It is truly amazing. | |

| wow, what a disturbing song. it sounds like some girl cheated on her bf and the narrator wants her to die slowly, and the other adulturer to die quick, just die and be gone with. that's just what the lyrics look like... i've never heard the song... the lyrics just disturb me because it's a prayer to God, and involves a lot of swearing... hmmph... and murder... and hate... i dont think God will answer his prayer :*( | |

| Two corrections: "That's not true, I want it to." And "Make him hold out hope that someone or other might come and fucking kill him." (In other words, make the killing last long enough that he begs for death.) | |

| Steve Albini has never been married, and has been in a serious relationship for over 10 years. This song is no more autobiographical than him talking about washing out his truck after committing a murder in "Fish Fry" by Big Black. It is, however, the perfect example of his ability to examine both the normal side of humanity and the dark sides we don't like to admit. The thought of someone actively praying to god for another's death does not sit well with most, but for a person in such an emotional situation, it makes perfect sense. I also think it's interesting how Albini shows the confused nature of tumultuous emotions: at the same time the character is praying for the death of his ex-girlfriend, due to her betrayal, he still obviously loves her and prays for it to be painless. Imagine the torment of this situation... | |

| This song isn't one that shows the darkness of someone, it shows how love can be so extreme. A man has been hurt, he is a good, religious man. He still loves her but he hates him for taking her away from him. "Him - just fucking kill him, I don't care if it hurts. Yes I do, I want it to" This has to be the most powerful lyrics in this song. Hes upset and his pain is first refused through kindness. Powerful, Emotion song. xx | |

| This is the most accessible song Steve Albini has ever written, but it's still a work of genius. Even though he isn't writing about his own feelings, he has always had a way of portraying the darker side of humanity which has made his music so perfect. | |

| actually, it's pretty obvious that he has some remorse for her, since he said she can go quietly, which is understandable, he loved her. however, he want the guy to do and for him to suffer. this song is really powerful, and i fucking adore it. | |

| Or Atomizer, I thought that was Big Black's best. I prefer Rapeman anyway. Are you guys sure this is autobiographical? Cos most of Albini's writing isn't, lots of songs that seem kinda that way are just written from someone else's viewpoint. | |
