The song could also be about the Crusades; the stuff about marching behind the crooked cross makes more sense in that context.

thinking about it. its a song about the idealistic world christians desire. its just not there. Once you become enveloped within Christianitys grasp, you see a crooked cross. deception at its finest.

"I heard it was the song that confirmed Jeff Hanneman's (and Slayer's) opposition against national-socialism, because of many criticisms they received (very frequently), even by former Sepultura vocalist, Max Cavalera!" That's pretty much it. He wrote this song to show that he wasn't a Nazi.

Great thread! I think the line "Do only what is expected of me" sums it all up: When fleeing Nazi's were caught and tried, the common excuse was, "We were only following orders."
