| this is my favorite Smoking Popes song. I just love the "butter on a summer day when she's around" line. I think a lot of us can relate to this song. I know i've went somewhere because i had that feeling that a certain person would show up. It's the love of dreaming and you can't let that slip away. The feeling of being in love is like none other. | |

| In my opinion this song is definatly about suicide after a break-up with this girl megan "bloodshot rearview mirror eyes" suggests hes been crying, "where the air was clean, and the sun never goes down" suggests heaven to me to not to mention the stairs ect... the last verse i think is about meeting someone else and them helping him over it. "somebody came and took my hand.. i finally had to go" and when it finishes "butter on a summer day when shes around" I think hes admitting he knows the same thing will happen. but thats life. | |

| Good analysis by all. Here's mine. The name of the album is 'Destination Failure.' Trains and railroads are often used as metaphors to explain moving on, from one situation to another. Megan made 'his' heart melt like butter. We never get over those kinds of experiences. It's what we live for! In the cycle of life, we experience joy, pain, renewal, and growth. Don't we all wish he would just get on the train with Megan. Melting hearts are difficult to rebuild. In the end, another girl takes his hand and leads him away from the train station. He tried to explain to Megan's memory, "I waited as long as a could." Now another girl melts his heart like butter on a summer day. | |

| it's a little oblique, and the upbeat music disguises it, but I believe the suicide thing is fairly obvious when you really look at it. The plot goes like so: -narrator, distraught about megan, parks his car on the train tracks, gets hit. -narrator almost dies, hence the "got a ride to another town" stanza. Doesn't climb the stairs. -narrator tries to get run over by a train again, this time sans car. someone stops him. So there are two attempted suicides in the song... You probably wouldn't notice upon first listen. It's really clever writing, which is what I always liked about the Popes. | |

| The whole suicide reading always struck me as a bit facile. My idea is that the verses are opportunities where he has a chance to leave Megan, his ex, and his memories of her. He almost drives away/climbs the stairs, so as to live the rest of his life, but he sits there and gets hit/stays behind (the original lyric was landing and the gate, is he talking about an airport?) because he can't move on. In the final verse, he does, because he waited as long as he could. Amazing song; if you guys haven't heard the acoustic version you should seek it out, it's very old and almost Mountain Goats-ish. | |

| yeah i think its about suicide also...same as what Jimnal said...only at the end i think he dies... "butter on a summer day..." basically the repeating lines in the song, "sat down on the tracks..." he parked his car/sat on tracks waiting for the train (that megan was on) to come and kill him (thats some extreme shit) "somebody came and took me hand..." he died and an angel came and took him away "finally had to go...." pretty self explanitory...what do you guys think? | |

| It's not that he went somewhere to see if the girl would show up, he wanted to kill himself by thowing himself in front of a train..twice! He was on the tracks when the gate came down to be taken back to her. This ain't a "sweet" song. It's suicidal. | |

| this song has to be about a guy who has nothing in the world except this girl and he realizes that so he decides to kill himself but she comes and saves(standing in a line between the landing and the stairs) he's talking about the stairway up after he dies | |

| i think this can be seen in two ways; personally i see the train symbolising love, catching him by supprise ('the gate came down'), coming and running him over. His 'bloodshot rear view mirror eyes' give a hint as to him not doing anything about megan, this love. Likewise, the 2nd verse gives the image of a house party, upstairs being the place for people to have sex, he's so caught up about this girl that he waits there despite somebody calling his name. He never goes about getting the girl even though he likes her and that's his downfall; sitting back on the tracks is trying to get that initial feeling of love, but in the end being lead away by someone else, he waited as long as he could- wait being the operative word. I can see the suicide theme too, the stairs perhaps leading to heaven? bloodshot eyes showing that he wanted to be on the tracks? but i dont know, best thing about lyrics is that they can be ambiguous. Amazing song (the acoustic version rules too)... | |

| i don't think he committed suicide, i took it differently. I think he was inlove with megan "butter on a summer day when she's around" but she died. He waits for her to come back to life. he wants to find happiness - the town "air was clean & the sun never goes down"... he tries to move on "climb the stairs" but he cant forget her "but I waited there for you". He wants to die to be with her "waited for it to take me back to you" but someone, friend/newgirl saves him and makes him change his mind about suicide but really he will always be inlove with megan - end line. | |

| Yeah its a shame these guys broke up. I was emailing the drummer back and forth when they were together and about to break up. He gave me the news before they went public. Anyway, this song is VERY sad and most likely about loneliness and wanting to die because of longing for a deceased loved one. | |
