| I'm not sure about this part here: "The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could" I was reading through these comments and someone mentioned he cheated or the girl possibly threw herself onto him without his consent. Does anyone else have any input on what this line is talking about? | |

| Definitely about holding onto a thin strand of hope. I love how that hope materializes at the end, when the chords shift from minor to major and he says, "please just save me from this darkness". It's almost palpable at that instant. | |

| the chorus makes me think of huge waves crashing down around him and the metaphor of the 'weight of water' especially adds to this feeling....'This splintered mast I'm holding on won't save me long' gives you an image of shipwreck at sea in a terrible storm and the storm relates to there whole fight but the best lyric in the song is: "The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love" No idea what it means....but i agree with what dcraigross said about how the person dumping said 'i cant love you anymore' yet all the narrator heard was 'love' and that was it...either way there is just SO MUCH EMOTION in that line! | |

| This is one of those songs that just makes me stop whatever I'm doing and just listen. Brilliant. | |
