SONIC YOUTH
DEATH VALLEY 69

Bass tab by Chris Lawrence

G-----------------------
D-----------------------
A-----------------------
E--2-2-0--0-2-2-2-2-0---

Verse:

G-------------5---------------3--
D--------------------------------
A-0-0-0-0-etc.----0-0-0-0-etc.---
E--------------------------------

"Hit it, hit it" part:

G--------------6---------------7---
D----------------------------------
A-0-0-0-0-0-etc.---0-0-0-0-0-etc.--
E----------------------------------

A bit of that is probably wrong, but I'm sure you can tinker around with
it a bit and figure it out properly.

Yeeeeeeeeeeah ! This song is supposed to be played at maximum volume, so that your neighbours get really mad ! They could also come to your flat with a bottle of tequila, and that's just right ! I think this song is just about sex, even if it doesn't seem very easy to accomplish... Charles Manson wasn't very sexy, you can ask that dear Neil Young (cf. "Revolution blues")

This song's really great, really menacing. I think Thurston may be singing from the point of view of Charles Manson and Lydia maybe one of his victims?

Yep, Manson. Fits in with Bad Moon Rising's overall portrait of the decline of America.

I really like this song. Sonic youth is cool i think that other girl singing with him sounds good. i love the guitars they have this creepy sound to it. indie rock also usually has a low-quality sound, like it was recorded in a garage or something i kind of like that. was kim gordon singing in this song too?

i read the book "our band could be your life", which had a section on sonic youth. at the time ('85) they wanted to parody reaganistic americana, so they wrote this song about the charles manson murders.

Lydia Lunch used to be in the No Wave band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. She had a solo career as well...

Manson? Sex? Drugs? Death Valley? '69? Yes, folks, that's what it's about. BTW, Lydia Lunch is one of the most important women in underground rock, art, and all around social deviance from the early 80's.

Well, that song isnt exactly on "ode" to Charles Manson, its rather an ironic point of view on the whole thing. I dunno who that Lydia Lunch is, but she sounds like a 10 year old trying to scream. But thats what gives the song a lot of its creepy atmosphere.

who's lydia lunch? i just got Bad Moon Rising, it's a great album, and i love this song. i dont think Lydia's taking the point of view of the victims, cus she says the same sort of things as Thurston, but i do think that Thurstons from the point of view of Manson, cus he says that when, 'she started to holler', he had to hit it.... i don't know...im confused.

I can't say for sure what it's about specifically. But I can tell you that there is a major reference to Charles Manson. The manson family resided in the desert of Death Valley in 1969, and of the the girls used the alias Sadie Mae Gultz. Sadie was involved in the tate/la bianca murders and at one point confessed. She was in love with Charles. Also, this may be streaching it, but Manson was into Dune buggies. this could acount for all of the references to cars, and going fast.
