ROLLING
written/performed by Soul Coughing
from the album El Oso
transcribed by James Meakim (mistameaks@aol.com)

This one, like a lot of the stuff on El Oso, is very cool sounding, but not a
lot of fun to play more than once. Sebastian uses a heavily affected
5-string on this song. i've tabbed it for a 4-string in drop-D. it's not
too hard to convert it to a 5-string.

I got so hyped up listening to this song while I was running late to meet somebody that I was speeding all over the highway, pulling into exit ramps and twitching from the knee down for half an hour after it... It's a fastass, rolling song. Hell yeah for Soul Coughing!!!

I think, and I"m not totally sure on this, but I think that the Cartoon Network "Rolling" video came out AFTER "El Oso" was released and after the band broke up in 2000. But then, I haven't exactly been watching Cartoon Network religiously.

This song, to me, is about Rolling on Extasy. Look at the lyrics : "I've gotta get a new balm I've gotta get a tight tension on I've got to slip it up before the rush gets gone I've got to feel it with the hot mind on" If that doesnt make you think of it, I dont know what will. Everything in that part relates to X. Suprising you'll found this on the cartoon network with what thsi song is really about...

Man, my friends and I were sitting around watching Cartoon Network and the video for this popped up with old Betty Boop style cartoons playing. At the time, we thought that was the greatest thing ever. Even now, this song is awesome, and the band is highly creative, certainly Cakeish, or perhaps Cake is just very SoulCoughingish. Either way, good music all around

Doughty himself said it's about X. Check out the liner notes for Lust in Phaze.

By the way, i have lyrics for my band, jaded teenager, up here. Check them out, and give some comments, im interested in what people think. Once again, that's Jaded Teenager. Ok, blatant advertisement over.

yeah thats when i first heard this band too, on the betty boop cartoons, that was great. i wonder if they made the cartoon to fit the song or the song just fits the cartoon? its weird how this song is really different from some of their other ones..but they're all awesome

Actually, I would disagree with my pill popping friend. Mike has had a long bout with heroin, which he has given up in the past years. Although "Rolling" would be an obvious give away to the X, "Bottle it up to keep it warm" and "Get a tight tension on" are more of the heroin culture. Both drugs are similar in their euphoric conjurings, but I would say, like most of Dougty's songs, this one is about the Horse. ~Jason

in response, i don't think this song is entirely different from many of the songs on "el oso", though each of their albums is a little different from the others, especially in the sampling. but whatever, they all kick poopa!

For some reason, I thought this song was in a tire commercial.

its about X...doughty the perenial raver...its about rolling on any drug-induced wave... who knows what its about... it could be about a cue ball for all i know, or a mantra for a friendly game of marbles...
