| Yeah ... really reminds me of the story of the Tower of Babel ... In so many of the songs, Chris writes from the pint of view of a cynic who sees the people and the world around him on their downfall, but can do nothing about it except say "I told you so." ... like in this song, he sees the way money goes to people's heads and makes them think that they can now do the things that only nature can do, they have the power to create and take control of anything, and sway the impossible in their favor, etc. He sees this and maybe he's even expressed his thoughts, warned them ... but even so much as him cautioning them against what they're doing is something they can't bear to hear ... "I'm the wreck of you/I'n the death of you all" ... I just got Superunknown a few days ago and am getting so into Chris's lyrics, it's crazy. | |

| Some sort of anti-modern civilization rant covered in biblical imagery. Very powerful. | |

| god chris must have been pissed off and depressed when he wrote this album...apart from spoonman my wave and the day i tried to live...although that song represents a sort of depresion...still the greatest album of the 90s in my opinion...i just wish he could still write music like he used to | |

| oh and fyi, there is a minor mistake in these lyrics... its supposed to be: ill be going down for the rest of the slide while the rest of you harvest the gold (not souls) this also makes more sense with my previous interpretation.. | |

| haha yeah my last post was kind of ambiguous. what i meant was to use "gold" instead of souls for the particular lines i was analyzing. but i suppose you could use either... but no matter- this is an incredible song. soundgarden at its best in my opinion. | |

| Probably my favorite of Chris's "apocalyptic" songs -- although 4th of July is also great. I like how he uses the parallel lines of: Building the towers, belongs to the sky..., Swallowing rivers, belongs to the sea..., Blowing the pieces, belong to the wind... It reminds me of the concept of "hubris" in Greek Tragedy. The wealthy and powerful abuse the powerless and the earth itself, as they charge blindly towards the inevitable crash. As Blind Opius points out above, the narrator is not interested in avoiding the calamity, in fact he seems to yearn for it. (I could imagine Chris using the biblical image of Sampson bringing down the temple, crushing himself as well as his enemies.) Is the narrator the driver of the "limo"? Hmmm... | |

| Just an absolutely phenomenal song. The vocals from Cornell are extraordinary. The lyrics are not only intelligent, but almost clairvoyant considering recent events in the world. The man is an exceptional artist that made the best music in the 90's and some of the best of all time. | |

| I think I have something to add. "Swallowing rivers, belongs to the sea" I think this refers to humans trying to play God. It's the job of the sea to swallow up rivers, not human interference and interaction. "Blowing the pieces, belong to the wind" I always thought it was "blowing *to* pieces". As in something being blown to pieces by gunfire. It's the job of the wind to blow things to pieces, not human war over meaningless things. | |
