See i Don't beleive that this was their best album like others say but i do think it was a huge breakthrough on their part. But about this song it is just another powerfull example of how much emotional power chris cornell can put into his voice. this is one of my favorite ones in that aspect. Another really good one that is similar to it is "Times of Trouble" by Temple of the dog. Chris's vocals in that are equally amazing.

possibly my favorite soundgarden song...off their best album..i also love those lyrics, mmbs, everyone believes that there is someone for everyone and no one should go through life alone, but why not? why cant someone be independent to not need anyone to be there for them?..indeed, a depressing subject, but one that reflects my social life...

I think this song is about a baby brought into the world and left alone when very young who is desperate to find its roots. "I stumbled on and all the world Fell down And all the sky went silent Cracked like glass and slowly Tumbled to the ground" These lyrics illustrate how the baby just "stumbled" into this world. The words convey confusion and uncertainty, which would be experienced by any kid abandoned so young. "They say if you look hard You'll find your way back home Born without a friend And bound to die alone" These lyrics suggest to me the kid is searching for whoever brought this child into the world, desperate for someone(Parent) to care for him. "I'm thinking of your highness And crying long upon the loss I've found And on the plus and minus Zero chance of ever Turning this around" This is imo the depression after failing to find the parents during the search, the first few lines state the sadness at being unable to find the parents and the rest of the verse is regarding the inevitable failure that the child faces, with no chance right from the start of life :( . A very sad song indeed.

I don't think it's about not needing anyone, not entirely, anyway; I think it's about the fact that you are so different, misunderstood and antisocial that you have come to the realization that you are going to live a very lonely, boring life. It suggests the possibility of other people accepting you, but Cornell is saying that in his case (or whoever he may be talking about), this is going to be a very difficult thing to do. Definitely one of my favorite Soundgarden songs.

This is going to sound stupid, but some parts of this song remind me of the loss of Kurt Cobain.
