band: They Might Be Giants
song: She's an Angel
tabbed by byrd (jason the great)

here is my sloppy interpretation based on guitar chords.
it sounds pretty much right, just work on the timing. the
pre-chorus might be a little difficult to comprehend, i blame
that on my inability to tab stuff. but yo, make do. good luck.

verse:

G|-------|
D|-------|
A|-2-2-2-| (play about 20 thousand million times)
E|-------|

pre chorus:

G|-------------------------|
D|-------------------------|
A|-0--0-00---------2--2-22-| repeat until chorus
E|---------0--0-00---------|

chorus:

G|---------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------| and repeat as necesary
E|-0-0-0-0-7-7-7-7-5-5-5-5-4-4-6-6-|

It could be just a love song, but it might also have a more literal meaning. Maybe he loved a girl, but then she died, and he's grieving over her.

i agree more with slugsinthefield.. this song is about when you meet your perfect girl and you drive yourself CRAZY trying to be good enough for her... love is a funny thing. i think this song is about him meeting his "perfect girl" and being in total disbelief ("These things happen to other people, They don't happen at all.. in fact.") and also being speachless over her (the space program part) perfect girls don't exist... but sometimes.. it sure feels that way... doesn't it?

One thing to keep in mind is that TMBG have a very playful nature about them that refuses serious investigation. Is this song about the tragedy of a loved one's death? Maybe a discussion of the tendency to "idealize" a new-found romance? I don't know, but from what I gather, this song is just an interesting situation: the loving of an actual angel and all the implications that are included. Don't take it too seriously guys... I mean their other "hit" is about a night light...

Just a love song, their BEST song though. My favorite of their's anyhow. It's a shock to the guy, that he'd met someone so perfect. I figure she goes off with her friends, and they discuss him and she tells them how wonderful he is, he goes to meet her parent(s), maybe wants to ask for permission to marry her or something. But they're holding out on it, and he wants to keep get it done, before she vanishes from his life, since things like this " never happen"

The throwing yourself off a building line could also be a biblical reference to Jesus's temptation by Satan after he was in the desert. The devil asked Jesus to throw himself off the high point of the temple, since angels would come to protect him.

Some of the lyrics of this song seem like they could be referring to the movie "City of Angels." In the movie an angel becomes human...by throwing himself off of a building. Also, the angels gather at sunrise and sing, but humans can't hear it. I think this song was out before the Nicholas Cage/ Meg Ryan Remake...but there was an original older movie that the song may be referencing...

A big favorite of mine. They always seem to do it in their concerts, but they change the arrangement almost every tour. On their live album, they use a tuba for the bass line. The song lyric is just reflecting on what it would be like to fall in love with a literal angel, rather than a merely metaphorical one like in most love songs. The "space program" bit is a cute pun, and the idea of zipping around in little shriner cars actually sounds like a pretty fun date.

I don't think it's about a real angel. I mean, it's all up 2 u, but I think it is a regular love song, but you're thinking of this girl as an angel. Are you good enough for an angel? Do you have to throw ur body off a building? She's so perfect, but you're so not. They're all meeting on a pinhead, talking about whether you are worthy or not. He's just confused, and she's the one, and meeting perfect girls never happens. I leave it to you, but that is what I got.
