| Well I guessed that my interpretation won't be as deep as dnilb eye driht or as frostedflakes098, but the meaning for me is really DEEP... is like a methaphor, it is not just about the narcolepsy Kevin suffered. Anyway here's what this song means to me: The part of the demons is about the problems that presented, that sometimes are really hard to solve, and so that problems become demons that could haunt us for a long period of time. "There it goes my last chance for peace, you lay me down but I get no realease" Is like a missed oportunity you had to face your demon, but you realized that very late. "I try to keep awake, I try to swim beneath" Is like trying to find a solution to your "nighmares" trying to keep awake, to figure out what would you do to stop your pain. "There's a demon in my brain who starts to play, a nightmare tape-loop of what went wrong yesterday" means to me, that you can't forget what you did wrong in the past and those old mistakes still are affecting you. "I close my eyes and dream that I'm awake" is one of my favorite lines and is like saying that the reality and the world you are facing is son scewed-up, so depressive and so horrible that you wished you were just dreaming so that sooner or later you could just wake up and find out it was just a nightmare and not your real life. I think the part of the "drinking" is a way of escaping from his wounds. I don't know how all of what I just said turned, but one thing I know is that I love this song, and the way the tune changes, I just think is one of the bests songs I have heard... and I'm also sure that 3eb is the best band ever! | |

| I actually have narcolepsy... and when I heard this song for the first time I freaked out because the lyrics perfectly describe what it feels like. And it's a really hard thing to try and describe... but they did a good job. | |

| whew this song must have been totally overlooked. it is not the best but it too is deep. i honestly have no idea if i have a clue what it is supposed to mean. but to me. this song is about a drug addiction. weed and drinking. using the references. of bone in my hand that connects to a drink. i hold my breath till its more than i can take. so its about his struggle with his addictions. then its also about his "nightmare" now this is a totally wacko way to view this but. in my opinion, he can't sleep so that is his everyday nightmare. the world is falling down around him daily so this is his narcolepsy. its so bad he wants it to just be a dream.. his real life when he's "awake" is when he is dreaming. it is when the world is in his terms and he can make sense of it all. so it's narcoplepsy in that he turns to everything to dream. but he can't. no matter what he does or smokes his problems are still there.. been there done that. and that's how it applies to me. so i think its a little deeper than previous thoughts. | |

| I really have always loved this song! It's one of my favorites. I love how it picks up and all of a sudden it's really distorted and cool. Anyway I heard that this song came from something Kevin told Stephen about how he was having these little attacks of deep sleep (thats what Narcolepsy is) and Stephen just wrote a song about it. I think the lyrics just reflect falling asleep and losing all your senses and just being lost in another world. Which I guess can happen sometimes when you fall asleep if you think about it. | |

| To me in this song, narcolepsy is symbolic for depression and "feeling this narcolepsy slide" when you can feel that your falling back into a deep deprission that you cannot get out of. "how'd ya like to be alone and drowing?" describes exactly what it's like to be depressed, like your on your own, and your slowing dying in a pool of your saddness."I read dead russian authors" stands for looking back on irrelvent and issews that are dead to others but to you they never leave the back of your mind. I strongly beleive this is what Jenkins ment with these lyrics. | |

| kindof in response to eric3eb. you could be on the right track. i too, had sleep paralysis. it scary shit, but overall normal. the first time it happened to me i was sooo scared. my orginal state of mind came back before i could move my body or my eyes. i remember trying to move or getting my bf to shake me to fully wake me up, but i couldn't move. it's just a really scary experience, cause you don't know what to do. it seems like your stuck that way for minutes when in reality it is only seconds. i talked to my psychology professor about this and it is normal. only a select number of people have ever experienced this but anyone can get sleep paralysis. usually the causes are irregular sleep patterns. so now i will get to the point. drugs and alcohol causes irregular sleep patters, which i'm sure Kevin did plenty of and obviously kept him awake for long periods of time. maybe the sleep paralysis really freaked him out and thats why he was having nightmares, who knows? | |

| *sigh* this song is so amazing! its definatly one of the best on the album, if not the best. This band fukin rocks, they seem to sound like no other band ive heard. All their lyrics are thoughtful and provoking, yet random...gawd i love them. Neway back to the song...i relate it to a situation a got myself caught up in and i needed to wake up and realise what was happenin, and get out. My favourite parts in the song are 'i try to keep awake', 'and theres a bone in my hand that connects to a drink', and 'howd you lie to be alone and drowning'. This songs so good!!! | |

| Personally, I think this song is about addiction. The "demon" in his brain is actually the urge to use (I'm guessing cocaine because he wrote at least one other song about the drug, but maybe alcohol because he does make refferance to drinking. Especially since he repeats "How'd you like to be alone and drowning" ). Being hooked on a drug is like living through a nightmare, you may feel like your not even awake living your life. So the "narcolepsy" is actual just his day to day life, but he feels so disconnected like he's asleep and none of whats happening is real. The nightmare is when he is awake, I mean really awake and realizing what he needs to do.. be sober. So he struggles. And loses. It's a wonderful song, and I do think it can have more then one meaning..depending on who is reading it and what it means to them. But I think he wrote the song about drugs | |
