Although i think of this song as graduate to higher self and not necessarily school, for the last 3 months of highschool, right up until the week before graduation, i had no idea if i would be walking the stage. I messed up really bad my sophomore year and paid for it royally my senior year. ( zero period, 7th period and niteschool alike) And if that wasnt enough, they gave me a real asshole as a "guidance counseler." She called me in to her office every single day without fail to tell me that i was not going to graduate and that I should start preparing my parents for that. I never doubted myself because i knew I was in the hole i was in because of me and i intended to get myself out and walk across that stage with my best friend, but it was a little disheartening to hear everyday how the person assigned to help me get through my senoir year really didnt believe in me. Anyway, i was listening to "graduate" one day ( and of course it wasnt the first time i had heard, i played the cd religiously) and damn near fell off my chair at "To the bastard talking down to me, your whipping boy calamity. Cross your fingers, im going to knock it all down." That evil bitch was handing out gowns for graduation that year and her jaw hit the floor when she saw me reach for one. =)

Maybe the guy didn't graduate from high school or college and it's really holding him back in life.

It seems to me there is an undertone of a high school sweetheart in this song. it seems like he wants to get out, and there's no room for her.
