I took a different message from this song. I saw it more of an atestment to the fact that man has always burned to become more like divinity. It's almost in human nature to play God, particularly by taking life. The images of making war on Heaven (Apollo dead) and to "bridge the great divide" (Between humans and Gods) seems symbolic of the human nature of trying to amass more power, and we build weapons that give us almost God-like powers (nuclear weapons, etc.) Just my two cents.

Thrice, bar Teppei, are all Christians. This is reflected in most of Dustin's lyrics; especially in this song (the reason for Eclipse being left off the album when it was released is becuase the label thought it's lyrics were overtly spiritual). The lyrics, therfore, for this song are about men who thought that they could live without God/Gods to the extent that they thought they would be able to kill their God (call everyone to arms). Furthermore they wanted to themselves become Gods (we'll fill the heavens). Men are so proud of their weapons (WE forged these weapons with the strength of OUR own hands). The chorus shows how men cut themselves off from their God (shooting God from the sky, Apollo lying dead at their feet). This did not have the desired effect though and they are damned to being left without a God (we wander lost in the rye). Men are then left wishing for God to return to them but God simply takes their lives and lets them burn (in hell?) to "bridge the great divide", i.e. the rift between the men and their God. The next chorus shows how men try to replace their God with idols (eclipse the body with stones) and treat their God who they deserted as they would any mortal (lay him down with the rest). The next lines serve to highlight how sometimes men wear different masks in private and in public (smile when alone, shed tear for press). This could be symbolic of men serving God when its suits them. The outro tells of men who try to reclaim their old God by "drinking his golden blood" and for a while they are satisfied, but all too soon they have forgotten what life without God is like and dream once again of Deicide (it was not enough). josh

Eclipse the body with stones And lay him down with the rest I smile when I am alone And shed a tear for the press -------------------------------- when he says 'Eclipse the body with stones' its like they all threw stones at god and like stoned him to death, they eclipsed this bright being with stones."And lay him down with the rest I smile when I am alone" When ther alone there really happy about the deed they have done to satisfy there greed. "And shed a tear for the press" and they are happy in private, but when asked about it they act like they show remorse(sp?) for what they have done and 'shed a tear'

I'm kinda getting a Jesus Christ vibe from this...the part about digging the body up and drinking his golden blood. And then "deicide" refers to the killing of a divine being...AKA-Christ.

Yea, riley is the one whos non-christian, which is ironic seeing as how HE IS GOD ON THE DRUMS! But i think this song is about mans strugle against a greater power, "we shot the sun from the sky", kill what we dont wanna let control us "we dug the body up, and drank the golden blood, and light shone from our eyes, but it was not enough, for we still dream of DEICIDE" clearly, we took its power and still it was not enough, mankind simply cannot accept control, it has to be the higher power, thats our biggest problem, ohh and "i smile when i am alone, and shed a tear for the brass" it shows how we sin, with the hopes that we can just redeem ourselfs in the end, thats the thought that kills us, christian or not, you can realate to that.
