When I first got Identity Crisis way back when, this was probably my favorite song on the cd, I've been working on palm muting and playing as as they do in the beginning of this song but I can't get my muting to sound right. blar. anyway, I wish Thrice would come to New Orleans some time, I really wanna see them live.

To mean it seams that he's talking about trying t make something perfect but no matter how hard he tries he just can't seem to get to where he wants to be.

RedDeath is right. I couldn't have said it better myself. Also, the second part of the song totally represents so many aspects of life. That when giving up seems like the only option, god reaches out and guides us along. Thrice is a great band and i hope to hear more from them in the future.

this song gives me hope. i can relate because its like, when im weak and i cant do it thats when the Lord is most real to me. "And in my darkest hour, the brightest light draws near to me". And im sick of these people who keep going on and on about thrice not being a christian band because it's so obvious they are. maybe they dont lable themselves as one because then they would be attracting mostely the christian people and by not labling themselves as one theyre able to outreach to more people... people who are searching for something higher

I think the song is about human life, and how we can break down everything until we are nothing but chemical reactions, but there's more to life than the science of our lives. What would our world be if we were all walking strands of DNA. We have faces and meaning in our lives, that is what has made us, not the chemicals inside us. At first, everything was a miracle to us...fire, rain, but now we can see the science of things, simplifying them until it breaks things down to far, and we lose ourselves in the endless code that surrounds us. It's a song that says we're more, and we mean more than what we literally are...it's a good song, you guys should play it loud...oh ya...and if you want you can visit my website at www.geocities.com/chubbyapes/ it's got good stuff...

this is my 1st post and i just had to comment on this song... just because every 1 is so wrong in the analysis of it. I would understand if you people never took creative writing or are dyslexic... *Drum roll* The story of this song is very apparent and vivid. Dustin is discussing and questioning life. "and what world have you deftly sold me?" Hes asking what kinda world is he living in? The chorus moves on and it ask about what he has to live for. Actually... he does not ask himself this if you look at "if you believe this to be true" The outro then concludes this great peice of art analyzing his actions and beliefs. Then concludes the song asking us (the audience) what/who we are? What are we doing with our lives? What are our beliefs? And lets conclude this ..."Thrice is this great Christian band that preaches religion..." I've talked to Dustin at concerts and asked if Thrice was a Christian band. Negative Ghost Rider, Thrice is not a Christian band. Dustin is a very very intelligent man and there is such creativity behind him and the band that it is quite distasteful that they are not recognized for it. Thats it for this song... Now to move onto another false analysis of a thrice song.

I agree; interpreting Thrice songs the way you perceive them is the most fun of all! All the songs come straight from Dustin's heart, and although, we never really know what he's saying when he sings these things, sometimes they can touch us in different ways.

ok comixevil, I totally think you have no clue what this song means, The Dood is right, hes singing about something higher then the small things we do, day in and day out. And yeah, either way its a great song. But I dun think he means to say that we are just chemical reactions.

although the members of thrice may be christians that does not automatically mean that their songs are based on christianity does it?

I think your kind of missing the point comixevil, I don't think he's saying that we are nothing more then chemical reactions but that theres a greater meaning to our lives and a greater power, like God. He's saying that without a deeper meaning in our lives, whats the point? Or something like that.

I agree with everyone that lyrically this song is quite amazing. But what amazes me more is the blend of many different styles and the musical depth that Thrice carries in this and all their songs. This song literally changes pace and tone about 3 times. It incorporates those sick 80s style metal guitar rifts, the cranking hardcore sounds, and some of the craziest vocals I've ever heard. If you ever doubted thrice's musical ability, listen to this song.

Kneecromancer: You didn't interpret the song you reworded it....example...""and what world have you deftly sold me?" Hes asking what kinda world is he living in?" Anyways, Thrice is not a Christian Band that preaches religon, they are Christians in a band (Dustin at least, I'm not certain about the rest) whose lyrics reflect their views, questions, idea etc. on life. Either way, you gotta love a band that writes positive lyrics (and can do it about something besides girls) along with incredibly powerful lyrics.

In my opinion, this song is about someone(i'm guessing Dustin) who has lost hope, and is looking for something to live for,or some one/thing to help him renew his spirits, not necessarily about God, but anything.
