as far as toad pretty much never sings a song that is directly about losing a girl, no they are not like emo....i think what i am saying, and maybe emo ezralite is saying this too, or maybe not - is that toad wrote emotional lyrics, and poetic lyrics, not ones that were polished over either. they were lyrics that you had to figure out, and it went along to music in a very poetic way. i would compare many toad songs to the "clarity" album by Jimmy Eat World, or some Sunny Day Real Estate. So perhaps indie is more the proper term...but whether or not Toad influenced these bands - they were definately ahead of their time.

"i would compare many toad songs to the "clarity" album by Jimmy Eat World, or some Sunny Day Real Estate." Neither of those bands are emo.

toad might be the first emo band - i went from listening to toad stuff to jimmy's "clarity" a couple years ago and right into the whole world of emo/indie. and the people who like bands like juliana and jimmy with me dont also like toad, which i dont understand...in 1989 they were writing this stuff, and it took this long for the rest of the world to catch up. toad is amazing

somewhere out there, someone is arguing that "this new kenny g is not jazz...you want jazz, you need bird or coltrane"... same deal with emo...we all know where it started out (i hope), but it's evolved along the years. the way it's tossed around these days is ridiculous...hell, according to today's definition, all country songs are emo, along with all r & b. the point is, we can't score scene points for properly defining emo because no one can anymore. you could in 92 or 86...but not anymore. as far as toad is concerned, i believe this song to be one of the best i've ever heard, and one of the most fun to play and sing. i guess i didn't expect an emo debate here though... :)

These arguments are so stupid. This a great song and a great band period. People get so wrapped up in whatever music scene their in. They either want to stick every good band in that scene or criticize a band for not being part of it. When you think about it Toad was never even part of a genre per say. At the peak of their popularity I can't remember their being too many bands that sounded like them. As for the meaning of the song, Davkay20 explained it perfectly.

Call 'em what you want, I call 'em awesome and that's good enough for me. It's funny, so many of their songs, I don't know, they're REAL...I don't know how else to explain it. They sing about things most others wouldn't dare and you have to respect them at least for that.

somehow this turned into an emo or not emo debate...im just saying that toad is an early indie band. but, as far as emo goes, you are right, it is an offshoot of hardcore and punk. its more emotional and the lyrics matter more...so the natural progression was towards the stuff we have today which people still call emo - like saves the day and the get up kids (which pisses people off). im not saying its right to call it emo, but most everyone DOES call it that...so let it go.

Everyone has thier own opinion of a band's genre. It seems that every song I view there is always a debate. So respect everyone's opinion and make it about the song, not the genre. Why don't you ask the band? I'm sure that Toad was influenced by many different genres of music and that waht makes them Toad. Bands are like people, everyone just like every band is different. Honestly, I think we should banish the genre system all together. Its something put out by the radio stations, which honestly I all despise. And another thing, some of you were commenting that Toad should be on the radio, well im glad they arent popular because to me that what makes them so special. If everyone knew about this secret we know it wouldnt be nearly as enjoyable.

Toad is amazing I must say. Listen to a song like "Whatever I Fear" and you can see so much about yourself in it. In my opinion, they are the first true EMO band, despite not being a punk band. Also, if you like Toad, check out Glen Phillips solo stuff. Some of it is just mind blowing.

ok, if your gonna be technical, those are indie rock. good point. maybe what we are really saying...is that toad was an early indie band. the line between indie and emo is blurry at best and basically just depends on how you make the distinction....think about what we're saying, not how we're saying it. thanks
