| A Backslider is someone who lapses into previous undesirable patterns of behavior, which would be sin. So This song is about him getting baptised and accepting christ when he was younger and he is just hoping that he does not relapse into sin. I would also have to say that i like this song very much...its one of my favorites. | |

| I think its about Todd being raised in a christian home and brought up to be a christian to only later on become a backslider; going against what he was brought up to believe in | |

| i think that this song is about the way in which his beliefs were molded by something he experienced as a child. basically how his religious beliefs were formed by his father and that "day [he] stepped into the water." and the way that it shaped his beliefs being that he doesn't want to "become a backslider". ok, that's my two cents. | |

| I don't exactly know what "backslider" means as a word, but the song is about being baptized as a child by his father etc. | |

| I agree with the other posts... More specifically, this song seems to be about some kind of baptism... and i personally think its some kind of evil cult or religion. Backslider means going against your religion... I think in the song, his dad and others were making him into a backslider, even though it wasn't what he wanted... or at least he regretted it later or something... either way, this song rules and it goes along with the album so well, which is a not really straightforward concept album. The album is all based around the main character being an evil guy even though it might not seem that way on the outside and he has a relationship with a girl that makes him go crazy and eventually kill her and maybe himself? Theres really nothing like this out there which is what makes me wish they had made more albums like this. | |
