| i personally don't see why people would think this band is a religious band, i think they are moking christianity, most of there songs say something about god or jesus, but in a sarcastic manner. I am probelly wrong, but i figured the lyric writer had a overly christian family, and he is kind of fighting back. but eh, what do i know. | |

| i think "the water" is a metaphor for a place he was stuck in. | |

| I kind of agree with the religion idea... but i always thought it was more like the baptism in backslider was already an evil type of thing... something that at least scarred him into becoming the person he is. This song, in my mind, is about how that made him an evil person (sort of ties in with the evolution thing). The whole "life in the desert" part i think mentions the girl thats in a bunch of the other songs and how he wants to take her with him so they can be together forever in the desert. Scary and awesome. | |

| The evolution metaphor is particularly telling b/c so many born-agains in the Bible Belt (prob. incl. Todd's family) are so violently opposed to Darwin. I think the above posts nailed it. | |

| I see this song as the water being his childhood, his innocence, and the religion of his family. When he grew up, he "emerged beneath the sun" and left his family views behind because he was attracted to the destruction of the sun. He loves that new freedom, but he also wants to go back to the water. | |

| another very cool song. I have no insight into lyrics, I can't decipher lyrics' meaning. But I can have an opinion. | |
