i'd have to say this song ties with schism as the best song. They both kick ass.

it can also be another Tool attack on organized religion, asking why people can't be sober and think for themselves

I like this song. Very dark and haunting. Anyone who can remember the late 1980's should note similarities to the music of a group called "The Call". Next thing kiddies....this song has nothing to do with drinking and/or drugs. Zilch, nada. Get a clue. That would be far to blunt on the part of the artist. This song is a story of love denied. The protagonist is remembering a love from the past. One he still craves. We don't know what happened, but it seems that they were pulled a part by external demands on both of them, "murder now the path called must we". He laments the events that pulled them apart, "why can't we not be sober, I just want to start over". But he still wants the passion he felt with her, "why can't we drink forever, I just want to start things over." He wants to drink from HER, not from a bottle. Wise up. He blames himself, "I am just a worthless liar...I will find a center in you...I will chew it up in leave.."et al. He is obsessed by her and seeks resolution, "mother mary won't you whisper, something but what's past and done." But ultimately, he wants her and would do anything to have her, "Trust me, I want what I want." It's a story of love denied, kiddies, love denied. Been there, am there.

Wow, all the irony and paradoxes aren't gonna get you anywhere Maynard. The speaker feels that he is always being blamed by others for everything he does wrong. And obviously he doesn't think much of himself. "Why can't we not be sober?" has a double-negative. Simplify it-- 'why can't we be drunk'-- he doesn't want to be sober and think, he wants to drown the problems. (Not that the song endorses alcoholism or anything.) "Jesus won't you fucking whistle/something but the past and done" is a rhetorical question. It asks higher powers for help for the present and to come. And I don't hear any whispering. Have I been listening to the song too loud?

The whispering in the song is maynard saying "turn that shit down" which is seemingly ironic because you have to have the song very loud to hear it and it is still very failt in the background, the first time you ehar it you may think it is a neighboor or someone far away talking
