| Ive always taken this song about a man who was left by his girl after she sucked all the life out of him. He goes insane and she doesnt expect him to take her departure so badly, Hense: "Hope this is what you wanted. Hope this is what you had in mind. Cuz this is what you're getting. I hope you're choking. I hope you choke on this." Her leaving him turned him into a depressed man, she's drained him of his soul, and has sucked him dry. | |

| This song is about shitty people, (vampires, ticks and leeches), and their tendency to drain you. "Beat my compassion black and blue..." More, it about how you feel when you have finally run out of patience with the abusers and shitheads in your life; when you decide that you must cut them loose and move on to other things. | |

| This is one of my favorite songs off of Lateralus. To me this song is about how Maynard feels toward the music industry.. bleeding him dry and asking too much of him. In the end, Maynard gives them what they wanted in an angry sort of way..."I hope you choke" God Bless Tool :D | |

| I think this is about all of the people in this world who can't do anything for themselves. They can't make themselve feel better, think better, or be better. 'Is this what you wanted? Is this what you had in mind?' "There, I gave you everything you asked for now get the fuck out!" As far has beating my compassion black and blue is concerned, he is tired of feeling pity and just wants to get on with life. | |

| Could he be singing to us on this one? Just in this forum alone, I've learned more about MJK's (or mHk as one would like to believe) personal life than I ever wanted or needed to know. We, Tool's adoring fan's, have been waiting for this album for YEARS. I think it's quite fitting that he write a song like this, although it isn't the first time he's written his dislike of fan's behavior down in song. For another example, check out Hooker. | |

| After going to see them live, I'm starting to think that this song is about their fans. Throughout the whole concert most of the audience were chanting the lyrics. I don't know about the rest of you but I thought that it was just annoying, and maybe the members of Tool think so too. Just check out Kroche14's post under Swamp Song, it kinda goes with what I'm saying. | |

| Maybe its about critics. Or just about anyone who is judgemental. And now TOOL is saying here .... Eat Shit and Die | |

| this IS my favorite song on Lateralus. I absolutely love the anger in his voice. I think the meaning is simply about people that constantly beat you down and try to take everything away and hoping it gets back to them one day (I hope you choke). :) | |

| personally i think that this song is about people who try and feed off of tools success and just jump on the bandwagon just because they're getting popular. | |

| I think many Tool songs should be based on situations that are in your ownl life. in Ticks and Leeches, i can understand what he's talking about. "leave my compassion black and blue" is saying that this person that keeps using you /living off of you , that you originally wanted to help, has left you with little compassion after he had been used by this 'leech.' that's what i think , anyway. thanks for taking the time to read my comments, bye :) | |
