I disagree with nearly every comment, and consider this to be a completely sincere (and thus syrupy) love song. It's simple and somewhat trite, but I always thought the "1st base . . . home run" thing just makes it that much SWEETER. OK, it might be tongue-in-cheek, with a nod to 50s doo-wop innocence, but I totally think it's good-natured, and by no means sarcastic, or a commentary on pop music. Oh, and Dave Lovering does not sing "Trompe le Monde," nor do I think he could if he tried.
