This song is about Ireland and the division. North and South of the River... Northern and Sothern Ireland... It is almost a song of prayer, or hope, asking for the senseless fighting and murdering to cease. It is also a look at the divisions of religion in Ireland.

I'm not sure if this is a specific place...but the theme is universal. Once again, we have another stellar song about love, grae, forgiveness...basically dealing with life in spite of the hurt. There is some kind of separation here...mabye between lovers, friends, or God and creature. It's probably all three...but there is not a compelte break. This is one of those songs that is sad and comforting all at the same time!

Sorry I don't know how to spell...My computer is slow today. I meant to say grace...not grae... and complete not compelte...

I rekon this song is about Derry (or Londonderry) in Northern Ireland. As in Derry the The majority of the Loyalist and Nationalist communities seperated by the river foyle which runs into a loch. The lyric "I want to reach out over the Loch And feel your hand across the water" may be talking about "bridging the divide" and the "hands accros the divide" which is topical in Derry.

This is an interesting song, mainly sung by Christy Moore, with Bono very much in the background. The passion that Christy display's signing this is amazing. Christy held very Republican views in the 70's and 80's i.e. there was justification to the troubles, he has since very much changed his ideas and though still holding nobel Republican ideology, the idea of violence as part of that ideology does not form part of it anymore. The particular verse - "Can we stop playing this old tattoo Darling I don't have the answer I wanna meet you where you are I don't need ya to surrender" Could some up Christy's own changed views. Yes its about the divide in Ireland, don't believe its specific to any particular town/city, it could represent any person or place

i think the derry idea is pretty good - the northern & southern irish division doesnt exactly fit the words.&derry has a notorious history in ireland of the bigotry & marginalisation of catholics - "higher ground is not worth taking". all of the lyrics seem2fit that idea of derry.
