U2 - One Tree Hill Bassline
I think this is right. It's close, at least.

E-88---8-8-8-5-4-4-8-8---8-8-8-5-4-4-8-8---8-8-8-5-4-4-8-8---8-8-8-5-4-4-8-8
That's basically the whole song.

I finally love this song. I have listened to it lots of times but now I have to believe in the stronger stuff. 'I don't believe in painted roses or bleeding hearts While bullets rape the night of the merciful I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill'

Ok, so this is the part of Bono's development where he leaves the girl to go off and be "reborn" literally!

It was written in memory to Greg Carroll,a maori U2 roadie.Who was killed running an errand for Bono in Dublin.I think its basically a goodbye to Greg. The reason why one tree hill was used is because when U2 were in NZ in 84 Greg explained the significance of one tree hill to the band(as the band played at the Logan Cambell centre, near one tree hill) .Yes there is now no tree on that hill,a guy called Mike Smith tried to cut down the tree, but it ended up having to be cut down properly because it got sick. "Oh, great ocean Oh, great sea Run to the ocean Run to the sea " This part could be in reference to the belief that your spirit goes into the ocean after death.

In early July 1986, Greg Carroll, Bono's 26 yr old personal assistant and stage roadie collided with a car on Dublin's Morehampton Road while riding Bono's Harley Davidson, the band were devastated and flew out to New Zealand for Carroll's traditional Maori funeral, bono later claimed that thier grief over Carroll's death was why the cover of Joshua Tree featured the band in the desert, "that year really was a desert time for us" he said..One Tree Hill was dedicated to Greg Carroll

Bono actually used what turned out to be this song as the actual eulogy at Greg Carrols funeral.

This is an incredibly pretty song. In my opinion, they should have included it on the Best of 1980-1990 album, but oh well. It's about losing somebody you love, and Bono was inspired to write it after his friend's death.

This reminds me of home (Auckland New Zealand) and about Greg Carroll who was the subject (a friend of Bono's who was killed by a drunk driver while running an errand for him in Dublin). So sad, so strong.

The reason it's called 'One Tree Hill' is because when U2 came to New Zealand Greg Carroll took Bono to One Tree Hill (which has now been chopped down) "Run like a river to the sea" is used because the ancient northern Maori tribes believed that if someone died, then their soul would fly through the hills and rivers to the sea. then they'd look back, and then fly to heaven or afterlife. "I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill" means that someone had died (Greg) and that they'll see him again on judgement day.

"And in the world, a heart of darkness, a fire zone Where poets speak their heart, then bleed for it Jara sang, his song a weapon in the hands of love You know his blood still cries from the ground" while i'm not sure about the rest of this song, this verse refers to the corrupt government in chile. victor jara was a singer who spoke out against the government and was taken to the stadium to be publicly executed as a result.

One tree hill is a real place in New Zealand. It is a hill and it has one tree on it. Im not sure if it's there now because I believe someone tried to chop it down (didnt succeed straight away, but the tree may have died due to "injury" )

This song could have hundreds of meanings - seems to touch on many aspects of life/love/loss/ - For me, it is the best U2 song. I'm glad it doesn't get played much, to keep the sanctity of it. Again, another tremendously powerful song on the best U2 album - Unforgettable Fire.

Hey Every1 jimmy from nz here im fairly sure this song is about the death of support crew member who fell from the scaffolding at their concert here in Auckland. The main symbol they remembered was One Tree Hill, a large volcano thats a major landmark here. Thats what they based the song on, and went from there. As normal the lyrics are gr8 from bono its a gr8 song, i hope this helps ur understanding

I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill this has strong reference to Revelations concerning the end of the 6000 year period and the second coming of Christ. At the time of his return it is said that the stars will fall from the sky and the moon turn red . . . events such as these will rush in the millenium or last thousand year reign of christ. At this time the first resurection will occur wear all those that have been deemed righteous will rise. This is in revelations and in ezekial of the old testemant. Anywho . . . It sounds as if Bono is saying that he will see his friend again at the time that christ reigns and the dead are resurected. Clearly he says it so much more poetic though . . .

I really like this song... "We run like a river to the sea" A metaphor for all the living (river) and how we have an appointment with death like all humankind before us (the sea). It doesn't get much more poetic than that.

There is the full story on this written up elsewhere on the web, but is basically about the death of bonos friend who was from new zealand, and a Maori native I beleive. ONE TREE HILL is a place in NEw Zealand where the Maori believe the gods made life like the garden of eden. There are other references to Jara, but the song starts :We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill" that is poetry for death, we all die. "And when its raining, raining hard..." his friend died on a rainy night. The backside of joshua tree blows me away with a bottle of wine and my headset on. I think Vertigo is superficial POP music compared to this.
