Cassandra Wilson does a beautiful jazz rendering of this song.

I'm surprised that this song has so few comments - it's quite possibly my favourite U2 song of all. I admit, however, that I've always taken the song quite literally, and I'm not quite sure how anyone could think it must be about anything the IRA have ever done. I'd have said that the line 'without mourning' almost certainly voids any commentary on a bombing. 'Love is blindness' would appear to be a play on 'love is blind', and in many ways, I think Bono's take is much closer to the truth. I'm not entirely sure why, but this song but strikes a chord with me - aside from the instrumentation and Bono's vocals being very haunting indeed.

Definately about the Omagh bombing. There was in fact calls made by the IRA, but they were misunderstood. To understand the whole Northern Ireland/IRA situation, I must recommend you reading the book "Bandit Country".

I've always felt the song was talking at least in part about suicide... "squeeze the handle...blow out the candle" would be the life-taking action itself. Blowing out the candle being a reference to death.
