The only moron i see here is you PURPLEHAZE. Speaking of moron musicians, hendrix was sub-par at music making, a dynamite guitarist but his music wasnt all that great. This song has been covered so many times and Hendrix by far did not do the best at it, i would take Dylans, U2s, or dave matthews version over him. And to call U2 morons, you obviously have zero taste for good music.

let me add that U2 is an excellent band, whom i love dearly, except their later stuff, pre-HTDAAB. That pretty much sucked, except for some exceptions. That is my OPINION though.

U2 covered this.... thats really not cool, bono is horrible this song is for hendrix and dylan and maybe some other bands of that era to cover (the grateful dead maybe) Its a dylan song and i very much doubt these morons have any idea as to what there singing about. And that extra crap he threw in makes him sound like a moron

i don't. I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. This song is excellent and to be covered by so many artists only proves its excellence. I think Jimi's version is the best, but that is only my OPINION. DMB version is great (just about the only song of theirs i like), U2 is good (i don't like that extra verse), and grateful dead's version is ok.

This song, as Dylan wrote it, has some parallels to Isaiah 21. For as much as it does, it poetically alludes to the prophetic fulfillment of Isaiah 21, the major implications of which are in the near future. The Babylon of Isaiah 21, a world power and a center of spiritistic activity, prophetically typifies "Babylon the Great" - a powerful, yet even bigger world empire of all spiritistic, false religions. Just as God saw that the nation of Babylon was suddenly fell in one night, with people (who were disrespecting him) trapped inside; so also God will cause the world empire of false religion to soon have its final and most devastating fall. (Revelation 17:3; 18:4,5,8,23,24) Those who really are wide awake see the situation surrounding Babylon the Great building. The scriptural watchmen are on the lookout. World events fulfill Scriptures - those on the watch call out what they see. Will the joker change his careless attitude towards his Maker? Will the thief quit breaking God's commands? Both have, after all, found camoflaged sanctuary in the confused and unrighteous state of Babylon the Great. Will either of them put in the needed effort so as to see their way out of there before Babylon the Great "crashes"? Those inside of the palace the night of October 4/5, 539 B.C.E were caught in the act of boldly disrespecting Jehovah/ Yahweh. They were feasting and getting drunk, and praising their false gods with cups and utensils they had stolen from Jehovah/ Yahweh's own temple on earth at that time - things he had purposed for holy use only, in connection with pure worship only. The Babylonians dared use these things in mockery of the True God. Today, those in Babylon the Great also misuse what belongs to him - things such as his holy name and the utensils of his own true words. They mix Babylonish spiritism with God's own sayings in their false, misleading, manmade traditions, dogmas, and creeds. They also blaspheme the name of God, using it to promote idolatry and spiritistic, false religions. Back in Babylon the city, handwriting on the wall, lettered by "the finger of God", suddenly froze the profane partying. It spelled out their doom, that night. God's warnings to get out of Babylon the Great, because it is doomed; and to not put trust in the nations of men, which have linked themselves to Babylon the Great, are being put out everywhere in this time of the end. Babylon of old was a (false)religio-political state. Its spiritism-practicing priests advised its kings on what to do - for battle, etc. However, the divining power of those priests failed entirely for warning them of what the true God was setting up to bring their ruin on that fatal night. Today, leaders of Babylon the Great have tied themselves into spiritually adulterous relationships with the kings of the earth, as prophesied and typified by the situation in ancient Babylon. Though their religions may seem modern and enlightened to many, traits of their worship are the same as the spiritism practiced in Babylon (even before then). Though the religio-political relationships between false religion and the kings seems mutually beneficial; modern spiritism- practicing preachers are also inept at warning either the kings of the earth or the common people about the cataclysmic demise (caused by Divine intervention) soon coming upon the entire global empire of false religion - Babylon the Great - which will immediately by followed by the "crushing" and "ending" of all of the nations of Satan's world system. (Daniel 2:44) God's own perfect, heaven-based Kingdom/government will then be set up, over the entire earth, completely. Then there will be peace here at last. As events progress towards the final "crash" of Babylon the Great and the end of the deficient system of nations in cahoots with false religion; it's like you can hear the winds of change begin to howl. So, for those atune to poetry and music, there's a good word tucked inside this song - the Isaiah 21 allusions. That being the case, read Isaiah 21 and its tied-in Revelation 17 & 18 (as well as the rest of the Bible.) Don't disregard God's own words - mocking his warnings, like so many do: "Businessmen they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth/ None of them along the line know what any of it is worth." (Dylan) [Funny: May 7, 2005, I wrote these lines in orange chalk, using 15 feet of sidewalk, while waiting outside to observe a U2 concert. My hope is that at least someone understood, or will understand: Yahweh's name and purposes cannot and will not be contorted. His name, his words - his possessions - are not to be wrongly used for promoting anything against his scripturally stated will. No one belongs trying to plow his earth either - to mess up God's cultivation of good-hearted people. Businessmen, take note: Yahweh and his truth are NOT for sale. If someone were to "sell" God's truth in exchange for other contrary teachings and purposes - which would be of infinitely lesser value - then they couldn't sing this anymore without being false: "All I got is a red guitar, three chords and the truth."

U2 and Jimi Hendrix are both awesome so shut up both of you. I think that Jimi Hendrix's was better but U2's is pretty good too.
