So many different reasons for this song. This is a great song-in my opinion, THE best rock song of all time. I'm surprised only one person before me commented on it.

oh man, i love sm staff for putting this up. the first verse to me sounds like a love song, but then the second and third verses support the civil war thing. to me it sound like a civil rights kind of thing "under a blood red sky, a crowd has gathered black and white." but am i just going for the obvious.

hugh U2 fan , I 2 like new year's day ! & has always been 1 0f my fav(es.). How many have the new vertigo though title track rox Camil . ;)

My favorite U2 song. Its from the album War. The Edge plays piano in the song, not a sappy piano part, but more the backbone of the song. Unforgetable song.

Back when this song was new, I felt it was the band's reaction to the sectarian violence in Ulster. I now realise the depth of my delusion; it's something much wider in scope.
