Jelly Roll Morton was a famous blues singer and a major influence in Van's music. His music was so good that it 'stoned' Van.

to show the greatness of Van. One day in my high school math class i was sitting next to my 'gangsta' friend( you know the type) and i sang to myself out of boredom: Half a mile from the county fair And the rain keep pourin' down Me and Billy standin' there With a silver half a crown Hands are full of a fishin' rod And the tackle on our backs We just stood there gettin' wet With our backs against the fence and he suddenly belted out OOH the water hope it dont rain all day. And i looked, shocked, at him and then in unison we sang aloud And it stoned me, and the rest of the chorus to a round of applause from our class. Crazy huh? well to me it was. Van is the Man.

It's about experiences when he was growing up. Going fishing, swimming, the man from across the road gives him poitin - illegal Irish whiskey - which would certainly get you stoned. It's about a great day that wiped him out and all connected to different aspects of water. If you want to get all bullshit-mystical, there's the rain (the sky crying etc), the water in the sea/river (purification, rebirth) and whiskey - the water of life.

Jelly Roll = Jelly Roll Morton, a pianist and one of "inventors" of jazz music. I guess Van Morrison is a fan :]

This is about country life outside Belfast in early 1950s - very well represented - you had to be there. Only difference - Van got stoned on the fresh air, the others needed cigarettes and whiskey

This isn't a patch on Madame George - seems people find that one too complex?
