| It seems like he loves this person so much that he will follow them everywhere, even in death. "'if heaven calls, I'm coming, too" "you leave my life, I'm better off dead" "I know I'll see your face again" (in heaven?) Seems suicidal but hopeful at the same time. Great song. | |

| The song is about Richard Ashcrofts father. The lyrics are pretty much correct but it's not actually "my love" it is in fact "my lord" It's in the tab book, well worth learning to play the guitar just to play songs like this one. However music is a form of art and you can interprut the lyrics however they relate to you or how you wish to feel about what is sung. | |

| What a beautiful song! Ben Harper does quite a lovely cover of this song.. I can help but feel a bit sad when I listen to this song, and knowing he wrote it for his father gives me a whole new perspective. My favorite line: "If you wanna show, than just let me know and I'll sing in your ear again." Mmm | |

| quote ------------------- by quiffporn on 11-05-2004 @ 11:58:40 PM This is one of the best songs ever. I think it is so funny, how so many people got pissed off about how it supposedly glamourized drug use, based on the name, without actualy listening to it. ---------- How on earth could this song be glamourising drug use? Regardless of whether or not it was written for Richard's father, this song just says it like it is. The drugs don't work, they just make you worse. | |

| I can accept he wrote it about his dad but I would hav thought he was aware of the other connotations it would have, especially for many fans of the Verve, their music, as a rule being fairly depressing and therefore the sort of thing people who are unhappy and turn to drugs would listen to. For me, however, it reminds me of a boy's funeral where they played it... don't want to talk bout that so I won't. Therefore, its really sad for me. Now I have friends who listen to it and we're all realising how true the meaning we get from it is. Whatever drugs people do, their not happy, obviously the next day, or when they come down but when their lives get really bad their not even happy with the drugs. I think for a lot of people this can be a meaning drawn from the song even if its not what it was written about. | |
