The first "update" didn't have the intro, the chorus was
off a bit, the verse wasn't too defined, and it
didn't have the outro verse & chorus. I will
include the "update" tab at the bottom of this one.

The bass in the beggining is quieter then it gets more
"pronounced" in the verse, and then the rest of
the song.

That is a good explanation. However, I do not understand this line-"Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice". I always thought that a girl cheated on her boyfriend and got pregnant so she comitted suicide. Her and the baby died.

a young couple who think they have it all, get pregnant and everything changes. the girl gets an abortion, with urging from the guy. as a result she ends up emotionally screwed up, and he feels like shit, full of guilt from being the cause of her problems. then they get on with their lives, each never bringing up the pregnancy or abortion no matter what.

this song has some powerful words and the verve pipe really know how to dish em out. this is my interpretation of the freshmen: when i was young i knew everything: age of innocence she a punk who rarely ever took advice: his girlfriend, rarely cared what other ppl thought of her or what other pple thought period now im guilt stricken, sobbin with my head on the floor, stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice now: not so sure what the shoe full of rice is representing, but the rest is, in my opinion, he got her pregnant and they had the baby, only they couldnt take care of it on their own, so they killed it and now he feels guilty. i cant be held responsible, she was touchin her face. i wont be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place: now he has denial issues and hes trying to blame the thing on her. chorous: he doesnt know why any of that had to happen, why they couldnt stay at that age of innocence forever. my best friend took a weeks vacation to forget her: new couple, same problem. his girl took a week's worth of valium and slept: she missed him and couldnt handle the loss of him and her baby, so she comitted suicide. and now he's guilt stricken sobbin with his head on the floor: he feels guilty that she killed herself. thinks about her now and how he never really wept: he remembers times gone by and that he really didnt love her and how he wishes he had or else things would have been better. cant be held responsible, she was touchin her face. i wont be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place: he thinks its not his fault because she was in love but not him. there ya go. if u cant tell, this is my all time favorite song. but its kinda sad. if ne one knows where 2 get the mp3 4 this song send me a pm!!! ciao

"Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice" seems to me to symbolize a wedding. Along Tbone732's idea, the girl became pregnant and committed suicide when they had plans to get married, so it stoped the baby's breath and a shoe full of rice. Baby's breath is a flower used a lot in flower arrangements and rice is thrown at the couple as they leave the church. I dunno, maybe I'm COMPLETELY wrong, which is most likely the case, but sounds ok to me.

well, nevermind what the song is about..this what i heard from the man, rick dees... well, the singer overheard a conversation by a group of college dudes down the diner talking about their friend and what happened to his gal... well, after that its history, it became a song.. its a beautiful song.. love it to this day... never get bored of it.. remind me alot of my best buds Daniyal and Erik Gardner... we used to cruise along down town with this song blasting thru the system, listening to it over and over again... always think about them when listening to this song... my favorite song of all time..

O.K PEOPLE! Some of you have the right idea about the song but, I DON'T THINK THERE WAS A BABY INVOLVED! BABY'S BREATH IS A FLOWER! And since people usually throw rice at the bride and groom at a wedding, I'm guessing "stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice," means that the were two young careless "freshmen" who thought they would never fall in love or anything. Then they met eachother and love got the better of them, cause after all, sometimes you can't really chose who you fall in love with, it just happens. So they probably got married thinking their love would last forever. But then they started to fall out of love, or, it COULD be possible that they DID have a baby, but since they probably got married at a young age, they couldn't support it. But they didn't get an abortion, they didn't kill it, the baby lived. But they did work extra hard to support it. And the father probably thought he was a total screw up and the mother probably thought she was a careless little-, you know. That is, if there WAS a baby. Maybe they had to get married cause she was pregnant. This song kinda reminds me of the movie "Down To You" a little. They really had no idea what they were doing and near the end she left because she realized it and couldn't take it anymore. Like the saying goes, "Love is Blind." They had no idea what they were getting into. The second verse about his friends and his girl taking valium, it just meant his friend went through the same thing, but they were smart enough NOT to get married and break-up. Unfortunately, they really missed eachother afterwards and the girl killed herself, where as the guy just mourned the loss of his true love. Well, it's sad. Hey, I 'm not trying to diss the song, I love it. IT ROCKS! But I think some of you are missing the point. You know what, I kinda think I might not even be right. Oh well, it sounds O.K.

this song is about two college freshman who 'share' a girl, and she kills herself over it.
