This is about a backwater redneck who goes insane and kills his daughter by throwing her down a well. Later, he hangs himself in a barn. Originally written when Femmes frontman Gordon Gano was a sophomore in high school in study hall.

This song is a close cousin of 'The Ballad of Hollis Brown' by Bob Dylan thematically, but may or may not have been inspired by it.

Such a darkly humorous song. I'm not really concerned with the historical aspect, although it is interesting, and I thank you, aczinke, for sharing. I just like the song.
