this song isn't about Rivers being haunted by his father's drinking.Rivers' dad doesn't even drink! They were hippies and strict vegetarians. This song is about Rivers being petrified of alcohol. So he didn't drink till he was like 21

Actually his dad did drink... and he also had a stepdad... his dad was a dead beat dad that him and his bro. Leaves hardly ever saw and when they did it wasn't pleasant. That's what this song is about. Kind of a comparison to his stepdad.

it can't be about the fear of alcohol, because of the end and the chorus. they definitely show signs of a fear of the alcoholic father who probably distanced himself from his son. ("this way is a waterslide away from me which takes you further everyday")

Why argue about it? It's just a great song, my favourite on the blue album. :)

I think the song is about a son who remembers daily about a father's drinking problem. I also think that the mother remarried another alcoholic and that he was tormented by the memories of both father figures. Rivers might have written this song about a childhood friend.......

By far, best weezer song, Rivers emtion in the lyrics and his feeling in the vocals, its great, the story behind this song, ehich i believe to be addiction (alcohol problems) is amazing for him to open up and express it. and he does it so well!

I always thought it said "...is a waterslide away from me the tanks are fuller everyday" (so be cool!) Am I wrong? I mean, it doesn't seem to really detract from the interpretation of the song. What say you?

"It's such a complicated story, way too complex to write a song about. I should never have done it. I was really afraid of alcohol at the time. I didn't drink till I was 21, not even a sip. I was petrified of alcohol. "Say it ain't So" was about when I was 16. I opened up the refrigerator and I saw a can of beer. All of a sudden I made the connection that my step-father was leaving...because my father started drinking when he left my mother." straight from the man himself. so quit yer whinin'

I think everyone hears lyrics a little differently. Maybe their liner notes don't have lyrics included because they WANT people to hear it differently? Just a thought.

I'm pretty sure this song is about his fater's drinking problems and his own tendency to follow in his dad's footsteps. I know there is more to it than that though, anyone got a better idea?
