| Actually his dad did drink... and he also had a stepdad... his dad was a dead beat dad that him and his bro. Leaves hardly ever saw and when they did it wasn't pleasant. That's what this song is about. Kind of a comparison to his stepdad. | |

| it can't be about the fear of alcohol, because of the end and the chorus. they definitely show signs of a fear of the alcoholic father who probably distanced himself from his son. ("this way is a waterslide away from me which takes you further everyday") | |

| I think the song is about a son who remembers daily about a father's drinking problem. I also think that the mother remarried another alcoholic and that he was tormented by the memories of both father figures. Rivers might have written this song about a childhood friend....... | |
