| At first, he's saying he believes he should be "exactly what you want me to be." In the end, though, he's asking "Exactly what did you want me to be?" Seems to me this is a song about the contradiction between intentions and realities. I just love how this song builds on itself and flows. And the "taxicabs were driving me around" is an image that sticks. | |

| I really like you explanation, suppossablethumps. Jeff Tweedy has always been so relatable to me because of his normalcy. Tweedy's lyrics, espescially around this time period in Wilco's recording history, seem to often deal with getting past the recklessness and anxieties of being an unattatched young man and moving into becoming a responsible adult/father/husband. Battling emotional disorders and addictions . is very difficult to begin with, but even more so when others who love you are depending on you. Ultimately choosing to become a better person for yourself and you loved ones requires listening to their concerns and feelings. Asking them "what do you want me to be?" That also includes finding the balance between your creative loves and your role as a human in a relationship. Plus the music in this song kicks ass, especially on the live version when Nels Cline drops that feedback at the end. Oh yeah, buymeagreenhouse, that line in I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, about the blow in Amsterdam is obviously a toungue in cheek joke. Jay Bennett is making fun of the fact that Wilco isn't your typical "partying" rock band. | |

| this tab is a peice of crap. the intro is on the E and A strings, not the D. the D goes too high and the melody repeats, it barely changes untill the chord changes. | |

| All good comments. I read the chorus as a plea to the public (his fans, etc.) -- it begins as a solo man getting his fix and then as an anthem of his persona; being defined by others -- Conor Oberst's songs tread on this kind of ground. | |
